Hen Hud athletes were busy from June 3-5, competing in Section 1 championship events and state qualifiers. Several Sailors delivered standout performances and secured spots at the upcoming outdoor track and field state championships.
Competition began June 3 at the Section 1 Hammer, Javelin, and Race Walk Championships. Senior Chloe Howard led the way, winning the Class B race walk in 7:49.91 — the fastest time recorded across Classes A, B, and C. Harleigh Corcoran placed third in the Class B hammer throw with a mark of 25.62 meters, while Matthew MacGilvray finished fourth in the Class B boys hammer throw at 37.43 meters.
From June 4-5, Hen Hud athletes competed in the Section 1 state qualifiers at Arlington High School and Suffern Middle School. Sophomore standout Sophia Savatgy led the girls team, winning and qualifying for states in the 100-meter dash (12.14), 200-meter dash (24.90), and 400-meter dash (57.59).
“I cannot think of any athlete who has ever qualified for States in all 3 sprints … truly a remarkable accomplishment,” Hen Hud head coach Marcia Bailey told the Peekskill Herald.
Savatgy also anchored the girls 4×100-meter relay team to a second-place finish and a berth at the state championships. Joining her on the relay were Michelle Ikokwu, Elyse Smith, and Alexis Smith, who combined to post a time of 50.18. Isabella Veloz and Danica Kostulas will serve as alternates at states.
Oona McManus also qualified for states with a second-place finish in the Class B 800-meter run, clocking 2:13.92 and breaking her own school record in the event.
On the boys side, Perry Quaye, who had already qualified for states earlier this season with a leap of 2.01 meters (6 feet, 7 inches), finished third in the Class B high jump by clearing 1.82 meters (6-0). Quaye also placed second in the 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 10.91 seconds. Although the performance did not earn an additional state qualification, Bailey noted it was the fastest Hen Hud time in the event in 23 years.
Taiten Robinson also punched his ticket to states, winning the Class B pentathlon with a personal-record score of 3,003 points. The sophomore set personal bests in both the 110-meter hurdles (15.79) and the 1,500-meter run (4:40.19) en route to the title.
Other notable performances included Olivier Birotte, who finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.75) and third in the 400-meter hurdles (59.32); McManus, who placed third in the Class B 1,500-meter run (4:53.17); Corcoran, who was third in the discus throw (25.27 meters) and fifth in the shot put (8.29 meters); and Mia Goodenow, who placed fourth in the discus throw (24.68 meters). Daniel Valdez added a fifth-place finish in the Class B 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:04.77.
In relay competition, Salpreme Taylor, Matthew Sullivan, Kenny Mora, and Quaye placed fifth in the boys 4×100-meter relay in 44.73, while Ava Schembari, Isabelle Carvalho, Kostulas, and McManus finished fifth in the girls 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4:23.43.
Athletes who achieved the state qualifying standard will compete at Webster Schroeder High School on June 13-14 at the 2026 New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Peekskill Athlete Competes at Section 1 State Qualifier
Freshman Luciana Bahr was the lone Red Devil representing Peekskill at the Section 1 state qualifier, where she finished eighth in the Class B 400-meter dash in a personal-record time of 1:02.65.
Her performance concludes Peekskill’s 2026 spring track and field season.
