After back-to-back losses, Peekskill rebounded with a 20-0 home shutout victory over Nyack on April 15, powered by eighth graders Malaiya Farmer at quarterback and wide receiver Tylah Grant, who teamed up for three touchdowns.

Farmer opened the scoring on the final play of the first quarter, connecting with Grant on a 19-yard touchdown pass down the sideline. She then found Briannah Faican for the 1-point conversion to give Peekskill a 7-0 lead.

Following a scoreless second quarter, Peekskill extended its advantage in the third. With 2:22 remaining, Farmer delivered a 12-yard touchdown pass to Grant in the end zone, where Grant elevated for the catch to make it 13-0.

The Red Devils struck again in the fourth quarter after an interception by Alani Jacobs set them up at the Nyack 30-yard line. On fourth-and-six, Farmer once more connected with Grant — this time in the corner of the end zone — for their third touchdown of the game. Farmer added the 1-point conversion pass to Faican, sealing the 20-0 final.

On April 20, Peekskill dropped a 13-7 home contest to Walter Panas. Farmer accounted for the team’s lone score with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Grant and also connected with her on the 1-point conversion. Defensively, Grant and Trinity Hardy each recorded an interception.

Peekskill (3-5) will travel to Lakeland on Tuesday, April 21, at 4 p.m., before returning home to host Class B contender Yorktown on Thursday, April 23, at 4:30 p.m.

Softball

The early momentum has cooled for Peekskill. Entering last week on a four-game winning streak, the Red Devils ran into a tough stretch, dropping three games over a seven-day span.

Peekskill opened the skid on April 14 with a 17-5 road loss to East Ramapo. Audrina Mendez went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored, while Alyanne Mendez (1-for-3), Ariannah Oviedo (1-for-2, run), and Hailey Nube (1-for-2, run) also contributed.

Two days later, April 16, Peekskill suffered an 18-2 defeat to Port Chester — its second loss to the Rams this season. Audrina Mendez finished 1-for-2, Jenna Shurak went 1-for-2 with a double, and Inara Concepcion and Mikayla Gonzalez each scored a run.

The Red Devils returned home on April 20 but came up short in a high-scoring 21-15 loss to Poughkeepsie. Harmonie Billy led the offense, going 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. Alyanne Mendez (2-for-4, double, run), Audrina Mendez (2-for-4, triple, two runs), and Khylee Capozzelli (1-for-3, run) also had strong performances.

Now sitting at 4-4, Peekskill will look to rebound on the road against Mount Vernon on Wednesday, April 22, at 4:30 p.m., before returning home to face East Ramapo on Friday, April 24, at 4:30 p.m. The Red Devils will also host Alexander Hamilton on Monday, April 27, at 4:45 p.m.

Baseball

Peekskill’s varsity baseball team has earned its first win of the season.

On April 14, the Red Devils traveled to Gorton in Yonkers and played the Wolves to an 8-8 draw. For Peekskill, Juan Maldonado went 2-for-2 with a double and a single — his first career varsity hits. Jayden Bradby finished 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. Rocco D’Elia and Trevant McAllister each went 2-for-2 with two singles, while Dillon Sniffen went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

Peekskill then hosted Roosevelt for a doubleheader at Peekskill Stadium on April 18, dropping both games, 19-3 in the opener and 12-5 in game two. In the first game, McAllister went 1-for-2 with a double — his first varsity extra-base hit — and Sniffen finished 1-for-3 with a double. Carter Ojeda and Elijah Resendes each went 1-for-3 with a single.

In game two, Carlos Perez made his first varsity pitching appearance, entering in relief in the second inning with Peekskill trailing 9-0. He pitched six innings without allowing an earned run and recorded three strikeouts. Sniffen went 1-for-2 with a triple, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. D’Elia was 2-for-4 with two singles, while Resendes went 2-for-3 with two singles and a walk. McAllister added a single, finishing 1-for-4.

On April 20, the Red Devils broke through with a 27-4 home victory over Poughkeepsie — their first win of the season and the first under head coach Dontae Harris. Sniffen made his first varsity start on the mound and earned the win, pitching four innings with seven strikeouts. McAllister closed the game in his first varsity pitching appearance, throwing nine pitches — all strikes — and striking out the side for his first career strikeouts.

At the plate, Sniffen went 2-for-3 with two singles and was hit by two pitches. McAllister finished 2-for-3 with a double, a single, and three walks. Ojeda went 2-for-3 with two singles and a walk, while D’Elia had a perfect 3-for-3 performance with three singles, a walk, and a sacrifice fly.

Peekskill (1-6-1) will look to build on the momentum in a road rematch against Poughkeepsie on Wednesday, April 22, at 4:30 p.m., before traveling to East Ramapo on Monday, April 27, at 4:30 p.m.

Track and Field

Results from the multi-team track meet at Clarkstown South High School on April 15 were not available to the Peekskill Herald at the time of publication.

Up next, Peekskill will host a multi-team meet on Tuesday, April 21. The boys team is scheduled to compete at the Mamaroneck Relays on Saturday, April 25, while the girls team will take part in the Croton Relays that same day.

Tennis Registration Now Open

Tennis season is here! Join the Peekskill Parks & Recreation Department and the Peekskill Racket Association for lessons and social round robins at Depew Park starting May 1. Registration is now open for Adult Cardio Tennis classes on Fridays, as well as group adult lessons, Pee-Wee Tennis, and youth programs for ages 6-9 and 10+ on Saturdays. College Watch

Track and Field — Division I Two Peekskill High School alumnae turned in standout performances for the University at Buffalo at the program’s annual UB Alumni Invitational on April 17.

Juliette Salazar (Peekskill ’23) impressed in her 400-meter debut, finishing second in a 22-runner field with a time of 57.80 — just shy of the program’s all-time outdoor top marks. Brianna Carter (Peekskill ’23) captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase title in 11:46.71 and also contributed to a winning 4×400-meter relay team alongside Meghana Reddy, Sophia Brettholtz, and Ella Reilly, which posted a time of 3:18.17.
