After falling to Westlake the previous day, Hen Hud suffered another setback on April 25, falling 26-0 to Brewster on the road — the team’s second loss by the same score in as many days.

Antonia Cooper completed 9 of 11 passes for 48 yards, while Kate Stratton hauled in eight catches for 56 yards. Charlotte Gaspar added two receptions for 10 yards, and Rachel Budde recorded two catches for 31 yards. Defensively, Maria Ribeiro paced the effort with five tackles, including three for loss and two sacks. Stratton added six tackles, while Gaspar, Arianna Byers, and Rodraya Pope chipped in four tackles apiece.

The Sailors bounced back on April 27, returning to form with a 24-6 home victory over Putnam Valley.

Christina Barry threw for 188 yards and four touchdowns to lead the offense. Ribeiro had three catches for 52 yards and two touchdowns. Gaspar finished with three receptions for 23 yards, and Byers totaled four catches for 50 yards and a touchdown. Stratton added four receptions for 12 yards, while Budde contributed three catches for 18 yards and a score.

Ribeiro also starred defensively, finishing with 12 tackles, including seven for loss, three sacks and one pass defended. Marlee Picarello added six tackles, while Budde had four tackles and an interception. Stratton recorded four tackles, including two for loss and two sacks; Pope tallied three tackles, two for loss and one sack; and Gaspar added three tackles, including one for loss and one sack.

Hen Hud (8-3-1) will next travel to Byram Hills on Saturday, May 2, at 3 p.m., before visiting Walter Panas on Monday, May 4, at 4:30 p.m. The Sailors then return home to host Westlake on Wednesday, May 6, at 5 p.m. for Senior Night.

Softball

New York State Sportswriters Association Class A No. 12-ranked Hen Hud kept its undefeated 2026 season rolling with a pair of home victories, highlighted by a 12-0, five-inning shutout of Sleepy Hollow on April 27. 

At the plate, Emma Barbelet led the offense with two hits and two RBIs. Stella Krebser and Angelina Carbone each added two hits and an RBI. Emma Johannsen, McKenna Silverman, and Sophia Velardo each chipped in with a hit and an RBI, while Bella Booth singled and Hope McKay drove in a run. Barbelet pitched a five-inning no-hitter, striking out seven and allowing no walks.

This game also served as the team’s Senior Game, honoring Barbelet, Johannsen, JJ Redmond, and team manager Katherine Devine. 

Hen Hud followed that performance with a 3-0 home victory over Edgemont on April 29.

Carbone paced the offense with two hits and an RBI, while Barbelet and McKay each collected two hits. Johannsen and Silverman both added a single and an RBI.

Barbelet again earned the win in the circle, firing a complete-game shutout. She scattered five hits across seven innings, struck out two, and did not issue a walk.

Now 12-0 on the season, the Sailors travel to Ardsley on Friday, May 1, for a 4:30 p.m. matchup before returning home to host Irvington on Tuesday, May 5, at 4:45 p.m. Hen Hud will then welcome John Jay East Fishkill to Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School Field on Thursday, May 7, at 5 p.m.

Baseball

On April 25, Hen Hud earned a 6-0 home win over Rye Neck behind six strong innings from AJ Rambin and three RBIs from Aiden Mazzola. The Sailors couldn’t carry that momentum into April 28, however, falling 8-0 at home to John Jay-Cross River. The teams were set to meet again on April 30, but that matchup was postponed because of rain.

Hen Hud (4-10) returns to action on Saturday, May 2, with a 3 p.m. road game at Pearl River. The Sailors will then travel to Walter Panas on Tuesday, May 5, at 4:30 p.m., before hosting Walter Panas on Thursday, May 7, at 4:30 p.m.

Girls Lacrosse

After securing their first win of the season on April 24, the Sailors kept the momentum going with two more hard-fought victories this week.

Junior Carleigh Ortiz led the way in an 11-9 road win over neighboring rival Croton-Harmon on April 28, erupting for eight goals and an assist. Bridget Couch contributed two goals and three assists, while Norah Devine added a goal. Kelsey Wong made 10 saves in goal.

On April 30, Hen Hud secured a 15-5 home victory over Westlake. Ortiz once again scored eight goals, while Melina D’Itri netted three goals, including the first of her varsity career. Kinsley Steinhiser added two goals and three assists, and Devine chipped in two goals. Avery Cody and Couch each recorded an assist, while Wong made 10 more saves in net.

Hen Hud (3-9) will look to keep rolling when it hosts Tappan Zee on Monday, May 4, at 4:30 p.m.

Boys Lacrosse

Hen Hud had a difficult night at home on April 29, falling 16-5 to Sleepy Hollow. Leading the effort for the Sailors were Vann Pastolove (2 goals), Lucas Beloff (1 goal, 1 assist), Richie Simonetti (1 goal), Ruben Villeda (1 goal), Chris Barreiros (1 assist), and Conor Butts (5 ground balls).

The Sailors (1-7) will look to get back in the win column when they host Pleasantville on Friday, May 1, at 5:30 p.m. Hen Hud then travels to face John Jay High School-Cross River on Tuesday, May 5, at 5 p.m., before returning home to take on Fox Lane on Thursday, May 7, at 5 p.m.

Track and Field

Athletes from Hendrick Hudson’s varsity track and field program traveled to the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field in Philadelphia to compete in the 2026 Penn Relays on April 24.

Chloe Howard placed 10th in the 5,000-meter race walk in 28:44.48, breaking her own school record. The 4×100-meter relay team of Perry Quaye, Olivier Birotte, Matthew Sullivan, and Salpreme Taylor finished 89th out of 117 teams in 45.41.

On April 25, the boys competed at the Mamaroneck Relays while the girls competed at the Croton Relays.

At the Mamaroneck Relays, the Hen Hud boys placed second overall with 33 points. Vivek Sekhri won the 1,600-meter run in 4:36.58, while Birotte took second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.87. The 4,000-meter distance medley relay team of Sekhri, Birotte, Jackson Morley, and Ryan Veloz finished first in 12:10.64. Quaye, Taylor, Kenneth Mora, and Ramy Lopez won the 4×200-meter relay in 1:37.30. Quaye and Taiten Robinson combined to win the high jump relay, while Robinson and Taylor captured the long jump relay. Matthew MacGilvray won the shot put with a throw of 11.55 meters.

In junior varsity competition, the quartet of Luca Baldo, Owen Druchunas, Hudson McCarthy, and Ryan Veloz won the 4×800 relay in 11:19.51 and placed third in the 4×400 relay in 4:52.63.

At the Croton Relays, in Class A, the girls earned several runner-up finishes. The 4×100 relay team of Sophia Savatgy, Isabella Veloz, Alexis Smith, and Michelle Ikokwu placed second in 56.03. Smith, Ikokwu, Danica Kostulas, and Aribella Rivera finished second in the 3×100 shuttle hurdle relay in 1:00.46, and Rachael Anderson, Ava Schembari, Isabelle Carvalho, and Klarissa Fernandez took second in the 4×800 relay in 11:14.04.

On April 28, Hen Hud hosted the Section 1 League G Championships against Byram Hills, Peekskill, and Sleepy Hollow. Both the boys (167 points) and girls (187 points) teams finished first overall.

On the boys’ side, multiple athletes earned All-League honors with event victories. Perry Quaye won both the 100-meter dash (11.14) and 200-meter dash (22.92). Olivier Birotte captured the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.94). Vivek Sekhri won the 800-meter run (2:08.77) and 1,600-meter run (4:39.51). Jackson Morley took first in both the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:45.3h) and 3,200-meter run (11:10.16). Other winners included Yamil Melendez in the discus (35.83m), Matthew MacGilvray in the hammer throw (33.95m), Sebastian Willkehr in the javelin (30.63m), and Ramy Lopez in the pentathlon (2,076 points).

In relay action, the 4×400 team of Birotte, Daniel Valdez, Kenneth Mora, and Taiten Robinson won in 3:48.96, while the 4×800 team of Sekhri, Victor Delgado, Cosmo Vogt, and Dylan Laker finished first in 9:25.35.

For the girls, standout performances led to multiple All-League honors. Savatgy won the 100-meter (12.12, a new school record), 200-meter (25.42), and 400-meter (59.86). Alexis Smith won the 400-meter hurdles (1:19.79). Oona McManus set a school record in the 800-meter run (2:18.05) and also won the 1,500-meter run (4:59.62) and high jump (1.44m). Other champions included Rachael Anderson in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (8:29.1h), Chloe Howard in the 1,500-meter race walk (8:11.74), Harleigh Corcoran in the discus (28.60m) and hammer throw (23.92m), Maida Dapcevic in the javelin (21.18m), Theresa Gyapong in the shot put (8.38m), and Liadan Farrell in the triple jump (7.68m). Sophie Rivera won the pentathlon (1,158 points)

Relay victories for the girls included the 4×100 team of Ikokwu, Smith, Savatgy, and Veloz (51.23), the throwers relay team of Dapcevic, Gyapong, Elizabeth Apienti, and Mia Goodenow (1:02.48), and the 4×400 team of Schembari, Kostulas, Veloz, and Abigail Mazzoni (4:38.87).

Hen Hud will next compete at the Somers Lions Club Invitational from May 1-2 at Somers High School. Select athletes are also expected to compete at the 2026 Glenn D. Loucks Games from May 7-9 at White Plains High School.

Other results

Boys Tennis Hen Hud fell 5-0 to Briarcliff on April 28 at home. The Sailors showed improvement on April 29 against Ardsley but came up short in a 3-2 loss. Ezra Smith (6-4, 6-1) and Nicholas Gatto (6-3, 6-2) earned the team’s two singles victories.

Hen Hud (1-7) will travel to Lakeland on Monday, May 4, at 4:30 p.m., before hosting Ossining on Thursday, May 7, at 4:30 p.m.

Golf Hen Hud did not have enough golfers to compete as a team in its scheduled match against Westlake on April 27, though Ryder Boston led the way with a team-low 48. The Sailors then fell to Lakeland/Panas, 203-315, on April 28 at Hollow Brook Golf Club.

A scheduled match against Sleepy Hollow on April 29 was canceled due to course aeration. Head coach Derek Kisslinger said whether the match will be rescheduled is still to be determined.

Hen Hud will next face Ossining on Monday, May 4, at 4 p.m., and Woodlands on Thursday, May 7, at 4 p.m., with both matches set for Hollow Brook Golf Club.

10 Questions for Emma Barbelet (Softball)

Senior Emma Barbelet, 18, is a standout multi-sport athlete at Hendrick Hudson High School. A captain of the girls’ tennis team in the fall, the girls’ bowling team in the winter, and the softball team in the spring, Barbelet thrives most in the circle on the softball field.

She joined the varsity softball team as an eighth grader in 2022 and has since established herself as one of the strongest pitchers in the area over her five-year career. A two-time All-Section selection and former League Pitcher of the Year (2023, 2024), Barbelet recently reached the milestone of 300 career strikeouts this season. Her performances also earned her a nomination for Lohud’s Softball Player of the Week for April 13-19.

Her athletic accolades extend beyond softball, including All-League honors in bowling, the Dan Veglia Award (League’s Most Outstanding Senior Bowler), and All-League recognition in tennis.

“I am very fortunate as a first year coach to have such a quality pitcher, as Emma,” wrote head coach Dennis Wolownik to the Peekskill Herald. “The more I get to know Emma, the more impressed I am of the individual she is. From being a three sport athlete to giving everything she has on the field.”

At Hendrick Hudson, Barbelet is also active in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), Peer Leadership, National Honor Society, Italian Honor Society, and Sailors Supporting Sailors.

Peekskill Herald (PH) > How old were you when you first started softball, and what initially drew you to the sport?

Emma Barbelet > I started playing softball at the age of seven, inspired by watching my sister play.

PH > As a multi-sport, year-round athlete, how do you manage balancing your athletic commitments with academics?

Barbelet > As a year-round multi-sport athlete, I manage my time by staying organized and prioritizing both my practices and schoolwork. While playing tennis, bowling, and softball, I also challenge myself academically by taking AP classes and staying focused on my goals in the classroom.

PH > In what ways has Hen Hud softball contributed to your growth as an athlete and as a person?

Barbelet > Hen Hud softball has helped me grow by building my discipline and teamwork. It’s pushed me to improve my skills while also strengthening my confidence and work ethic on and off the field.

PH > Who are some of your biggest role models, both in sports and in life, and what impact have they had on you?

Barbelet > In my sports, I’ve always looked up to the seniors as role models because of their leadership and dedication. Outside of sports, my parents are my biggest role models, always encouraging me to give my best while supporting me in everything I do.

PH > Who would you say is the funniest teammate on the softball team, and what makes them so entertaining during practices or bus rides?

Barbelet > The funniest teammate on the softball team is definitely Ang. She always makes me laugh and keeps everyone entertained, especially by singing on the bus rides.

PH > What has been the most memorable moment of your softball career so far?

Barbelet > The most memorable moment of my softball career was beating Ardsley in the semifinals last year to advance to the sectional championship. We had lost to them twice during the regular season, which made the win even more meaningful.

PH > As a five-year member of the team and a two-time All-Section pitcher, what drove you to maintain such a high level of performance throughout your time at Hen Hud?

Barbelet > As a five-year member of the team and a two-time All-Section pitcher, I’ve learned the importance of staying focused and consistent for my teammates. As a pitcher, I understand how much my role connects to the team’s overall performance.

PH > How did you approach your role as captain of a varsity program?

Barbelet > As a captain, I focused on building strong connections within the team both on and off the field. I made it a priority to create a positive and fun environment at practices and games where everyone felt included.

PH > What advice would you give to younger athletes who may want to join the varsity softball team one day?

Barbelet > Softball has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and has helped me build so many meaningful friendships. My advice is to stay dedicated, work hard, and enjoy the process because it really pays off.

PH > What are your plans after high school, and what career path are you hoping to pursue? 

Barbelet > After high school, I plan to attend UConn and study nursing. I hope to work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

College Watch

Women’s Lacrosse — Division I Goalie Maddy Porter (Hen Hud ‘23) earned her fifth Mid-American Conference Goalkeeper of the Week honor of the season on April 28 after a standout performance in EMU’s 16-4 win over Youngstown State on April 25. Porter played the first three quarters, making 11 saves while allowing just three goals. Her 11 saves tied for the fifth-highest single-game total against a MAC opponent in program history and marked the seventh double-digit save performance of the season and the 19th of her career.

EMU and Porter’s season came to an end April 30 in heartbreaking fashion with a 10-9 double-overtime semifinal loss to Akron in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. Porter finished with eight saves and six ground balls in the defeat. She closed the 2026 campaign with a program-record 72 ground balls and 161 saves, the second-highest single-season total in program history, trailing only the 179 stops she recorded last season.

Men’s Lacrosse — Division III University of Scranton senior Thomas Popolizio (Hen Hud ‘23) was one of 10 student-athletes named to the All-Landmark Conference Team, as announced April 29. Popolizio earned First Team Long Stick Midfielder honors for the second straight season, marking his second consecutive First Team All-Conference selection. He is tied for second on the team with 17 caused turnovers this season and has added 15 ground balls.
