Red Devils and Sailors athletes were in action Wednesday, May 27, at the Section 1 Class B Track and Field Championships at Hendrick Hudson High School, competing against some of the area’s top talent.
For Peekskill, Gregory Tompkins III placed seventh in the boys 100-meter preliminaries in 11.62 seconds, while also finishing 13th in the 200-meter dash (23.57) and 15th in the 400-meter dash (53.76). Anderson Marin placed 25th in the 400-meter dash in 56.70, followed by Erick Quinche in 26th at 57.56. Oscar Curillo finished 24th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.79.
On the girls side, Amanda Nelson led the way for Peekskill, placing fourth in the long jump with a mark of 4.71 meters. She also finished 25th in the 100-meter preliminaries in 14.06. Luciana Bahr earned an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter dash in 1:03.53, while Michell Paute placed 26th (1:16.99) and Erika Otavalo finished 27th (1:19.02). Charly Greenaway took 24th in the shot put with a throw of 6.07 meters.
For Hendrick Hudson, Taiten Robinson paced the boys team by winning the pentathlon with 2,949 points, repeating as sectional champion for the second straight year.
Perry Quaye was runner-up in the 100-meter dash in 11.12, while Olivier Birotte placed third in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.82. Hen Hud’s 4×100-meter relay team of Quaye, Salpreme Taylor, Kenny Mora, and Matthew Sullivan finished fourth in a season-best 44.71.
Sophomore Sophia Savatgy led the Sailors girls team with victories in both the 200-meter dash (25.04) and 400-meter dash (57.53). She also placed third in the 100-meter dash in 12.59. Oona McManus captured first place in the 800-meter run, setting a personal best and new school record with a time of 2:14.96. McManus also finished fourth in the 1,500-meter run in 4:53.15. Mia Goodenow added a third-place finish in the discus with a throw of 25.37 meters.
In relay competition, the quartet of Savatgy, Michelle Ikokwu, Alexis Smith, and Elyse Smith placed second in the 4×100-meter relay in 50.31. McManus, Ava Schembari, Abby Mazzoni, and Isabelle Carvalho finished fourth in the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4:21.89.
Athletes will next turn their attention toward qualifying for the state championships. Section 1 State Qualifiers are scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, at Hendrick Hudson High School for the hammer throw, javelin, and race walk events, followed by competition on Thursday, June 4, at Arlington High School and on Friday, June 5, at Suffern Middle School.
