Soccer games can turn on a single strike – and in Peekskill’s Sept. 26 match against Brewster, there were several. In a scrappy, end-to-end contest at Torpy Field, the Red Devils earned their second win of the season with a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Peekskill came out firing from the opening whistle, pressing Brewster high and forcing mistakes. Just two minutes in, Eddy Farfan put the Red Devils ahead with a low driven shot from outside the box that nestled into the bottom-left corner. Brewster responded five minutes later when Nicholas Arciuolo unleashed a long effort from the 30-yard line that seemed more like a pass than a shot, but it somehow looped past goalkeeper Jonathan Farez to level the score at 1–1.
With 11 minutes left in the first half, Peekskill senior captain Maddox Lozada produced a moment of brilliance. Surrounded by defenders and far from goal, Lozada struck a stunning long-range shot into the top-right corner – a goal that instantly ignited the home crowd. In disbelief, Lozada ripped off his jersey and celebrated with teammates as Peekskill reclaimed the lead heading into halftime. [View Lozada’s goal below]
The second half proved a bit tougher as Brewster refused to fold. Midway through the second half, a messy corner sequence ended with Andy Sagastume slotting home from close range to make it 2–2. As the time ticked down, the game seemed destined for a draw – until luck tilted back in Peekskill’s favor.
In the last five minutes, a cleared corner kick fell to defender Cris Lazo outside the box. Lazo lofted what looked like a cross, but after a missed touch in the penalty area, the ball bounced into the net. The unexpected strike sent the Red Devils into jubilation and stood as the match-winner.
With the victory, Peekskill improved to 2-3-2 on the season. Up next, the Red Devils host Poughkeepsie on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. and Carmel on Friday, Oct. 3, at 6:30 p.m., before traveling to Lakeland on Monday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m.
