A long line will form outside Elks Lodge #744 in Peekskill beginning this afternoon (Friday, June 5) for a new edition of the Community Closet. The program, organized by MendByMe and hosted at the Elks facility located at 1038 Brown Street, will offer free clothing, shoes and other items during two sessions intended to support those most in need.
The event will begin today at 3 p.m. and continue for at least four hours. The community closet will resume Saturday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to noon. The initiative is also supported by Inner Wheel, an international women’s volunteer service network that develops social support and community assistance projects around the world. On this occasion, the organization will distribute new socks and underwear to participants.
During the scheduled hours, attendees will be able to walk through the large Elks hall and select textile items and accessories at no cost. The items will be organized by category and size on more than a dozen clothing racks.
The campaign operates as a free shopping experience open to the public. No prior registration or special documentation is required to participate. The goal is to provide access to essential items in a supportive, accessible and respectful environment for visitors. Inside the hall, volunteers and organizers will be available to assist attendees.
MendByMe has made these events one of its primary community support initiatives. The organization holds several similar events throughout the year, particularly during seasonal transitions, with the goal of helping families obtain clothing appropriate for changing weather conditions.
The campaigns benefit area residents, including families facing financial hardship, people experiencing emergencies and newcomers to the region. A large portion of the available items comes from community donations. Before reaching the display racks, the garments go through selection, sorting and preparation processes that help ensure they are in good condition for reuse. The effort seeks to extend the life of clothing while addressing the needs of beneficiaries.
