Traditions of Shavuot will arrive in Peekskill with stories, music, and cheese. On Thursday, May 21, Kids Shavuot Cheesemaking Fun will take place, an event designed for families with children that seeks to bring the community closer to one of the most important celebrations in the Jewish calendar. The gathering will be held at First Hebrew Congregation, located at 1821 Main Street.
The program is scheduled from 4 p.m. and will last three hours. It will include hands-on activities such as mozzarella cheesemaking and is designed for children between the ages of 3 and 12. There will also be a dairy tasting station. The goal of the congregation is to present traditions in an engaging way to reach younger audiences. New families will also be welcome.
The activity will be led by Rabbi Jonah Geffen, who will share with attendees details about the holiday that commemorates the giving of the Torah, the most sacred text in Judaism, to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai. Space for the event is limited. Families are encouraged to register by May 19. Although there is no fixed cost for the event, the congregation suggests a voluntary donation to cover the cost of materials used during the activities.
In addition to its religious significance, Shavuot also has agricultural roots tied to ancient spring harvests in the region of Israel. One of its most widespread traditions, although not a religious requirement, is the consumption of dairy foods. This custom developed across different Jewish communities and is now reflected in cultural and family activities involving cheeses, desserts, and other milk-based products.
The activity is part of a broader calendar of community events organized by First Hebrew Congregation, which includes weekly Shabbat services, educational programs, and social gatherings such as Bingo at First Hebrew and Men’s Club programs.
