Football
It was a homecoming to remember for Hen Hud football on Sept. 19, as the Sailors defeated Rye Neck 40-28 in front of a packed crowd.
Running back Justin Parkes powered the offense with a dominant performance – 22 carries for 238 yards and six touchdowns – while Jack Hiltsley chipped in with two catches for 36 yards. On defense, Hunter Kennedy-Brown recorded four tackles and two interceptions; Shawn O’Mara had 11 tackles and two tackles for loss; Liam Urezzio added six tackles, Ethan Walsh five, and Yamil Melendez contributed two tackles and a sack. Parkes is currently one of the rushing leaders in Section 1 with 484 yards in three games.
For senior Shawn O’Mara Jr., the night carried a deeper meaning. Just six days earlier, on Sept. 13, O’Mara lost his father, Shawn O’Mara Sr. – a Navy veteran who served Verplanck, N.Y., as fire commissioner, past captain of the Verplanck Fire Department, and as a funeral director at O’Mara & Carpentieri Funeral Home.
In the wake of his father’s passing, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support O’Mara and his two siblings. As of Sept. 25, it had raised $40,552 toward a $75,000 goal.
“Once we stepped onto the field, it just felt like it was my first break from everything,” O’Mara said in an interview with Hen Hud’s Pete Ruf after the win. “I just couldn’t be happier to have spent it with the people that I was on this field with.”
He added: “There was a long time where I didn’t really believe in myself and everything, but the one man who always did was my father. To do that for him today meant – there’s no words – just everything.”
