Boys Soccer

Peekskill’s varsity boys soccer team endured a turbulent week marked by both a first season win and a frightening medical emergency.
On Sept. 10, the Red Devils fell 2-0 on the road to Walter Panas. They conceded just seven minutes into the match and spent most of the game chasing. Despite standout performances from goalkeeper Jonathan Farez and captain Maddoz Lozada, the team failed to generate clear chances. Defender Cris Lazo was sent off midway through the second half for pulling back a Panas player on a breakaway. Down to 10 men, Peekskill held on until the final 10 minutes, when Panas sealed the result with a top-corner strike beyond Farez’s reach.
Two days later, on Sept. 12, Peekskill hosted Haldane and appeared to bounce back. Peekskill’s Alejandro Montano opened the scoring with a back-post header off a corner in the fifth minute. Minutes later, Erick Lojano capitalized on a defensive miscue to double the lead. Luis Carchipulla and David Saavedra added two more in quick succession, giving Peekskill a 4–0 advantage before halftime. Haldane pulled one back just before the break.
The second half, however, took a devastating turn. Less than two minutes after the restart, Peekskill captain Melvin Criollo went down while challenging for a cross. When he did not get up, play was halted. Coaches and school staff rushed to his side, and an ambulance arrived shortly after to take him from the field. The match was not resumed.
As of this writing, no updates on Criollo’s condition or the status of the match have been released by Peekskill Athletics. (More information on this player injury can be found here.)
Peekskill’s upcoming schedule includes home games against Suffern (Sept. 16) and Gorton (Sept. 22), a road trip to Ossining (Sept. 18), and a home match against Mahopac on Sept. 20 as part of the district’s Hispanic Heritage Showcase.
Girls Soccer

Peekskill earned their second win of the season on Sept. 9, defeating Yonkers Montessori, 4-1. Sophomore forward Kimberly Alfaro put Peekskill on the board 16 minutes into the first half, slotting home a simple tap-in off an assist from Dayana Sari. Yonkers Montessori found an equalizer five minutes into the second half, with a high shot that sailed just beyond the reach of goalkeeper Victoria Jovel. Despite the setback, the Red Devils quickly regained control. Alfaro struck again only minutes later, once more assisted by Sari, to restore the lead. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Peekskill sealed the victory. Ashlee Ordonez and Valeria Otavalo each found the back of the net to close out the 4–1 win.
After five days’ rest, the Red Devils traveled to Mount Vernon on Sept. 15 and cruised to a 6-0 victory.with an away match at Mount Vernon. The game was a walk in the park for the Red Devils, winning 6-0. Goal scorers included Jozelyn Zhinin (2), Kimberly Alfaro, Brianna Tuba, and first-time varsity scorers Shea Rekeda and Heidy Lituma. Victoria Jovel kept her first clean sheet of the season.
