Boys Soccer
Two losses in seven days – the Hen Hud boys soccer team is still searching for its first win of the 2025 season.
On Sept. 5, Hen Hud fell 2-1 on the road to Riverside High School (Yonkers). Captain Perry Quaye, assisted by John Dominguez, netted the Sailors’ first goal of the campaign.
Things didn’t improve much on Sept. 11, when Hen Hud lost 4-1 at home to Somers. Despite resting many starters, Somers dominated from the opening whistle and built a 4-0 lead before the final 10 minutes. Junior midfielder Brandon Rios grabbed a late consolation goal for the Sailors with seven minutes remaining.
Hen Hud (0-2-1) now turns its focus to a busy stretch ahead. The Sailors host Gorton on Friday, Sept. 12, at 5 p.m., then travel to Somers on Monday, Sept. 15, at 5:15 p.m. They’ll also host Putnam Valley on Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 4:30 p.m. before hitting the road to face Byram Hills on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 5:15 p.m.
Girls Soccer
Hen Hud’s varsity girls’ soccer team will have to wait a little longer before they can officially kickstart their campaign. The Sailors dropped two games this past week, extending their losing streak to three.
On Sept. 9, Hen Hud hosted Irvington and narrowly fell 1-0. Midway through the first half, the Sailors nearly took the lead when Mallory Parks struck the crossbar off a low, driven cross from Yorgia Schattman. With seven minutes left in the half, Kinsley Steinhiser had another chance to put Hen Hud in front but dragged her shot wide. Although Hen Hud created clearer chances than Irvington, they could not finish. Ultimately, in the second half, a lapse in concentration on a routine corner kick left an Irvington player unmarked in the box for an easy shot past goalkeeper Avery Motko, which proved to be the difference.
The following day, on Sept. 10, the Sailors traveled to face 2024 Class A sectional semifinalist Pleasantville and were overpowered, 7-1. Pleasantville raced to a 6–0 lead in the first half before rotating its squad to see out the match. Hen Hud conceded a seventh after the break but kept pressing. Their efforts were rewarded when Skyler Selkin tapped in a rebound after Pleasantville’s keeper spilled a shot, marking the Sailors’ first goal of the 2025 campaign.
Up next, Hen Hud (0-3) will visit Blind Brook on Friday, Sept. 12, at 4:30 p.m., then travel to Sleepy Hollow on Monday, Sept. 15, at 4:30 p.m. The Sailors will return home on Wednesday, Sept. 17, to face Edgemont at 6:30 p.m.
