Hendrick Hudson’s historic 2025 flag football season came to an end on May 31, as the Sailors lost to Section 4 champions Owego Free Academy, 40-14, in the regional championship at Tappan Zee High School.
Senior quarterback Lucy Mager led the Sailors’ offense, completing eight passes for 84 yards, including a touchdown and an extra-point pass. She also added 69 yards on the ground, converting another extra-point. Maria Ribeiro contributed 13 rushing yards and four receptions for 18 yards. Kaitlyn Raguso had two receptions for 43 yards, one of which resulted in a touchdown; she scored Hen Hud’s second touchdown after returning a punt. Jonna Rivera hauled in a 16-yard reception, while Kate Stratton added a 7-yard reception. On defense, Raguso recorded nine tackles, Mager had five, and Sasha Lemus Villeda notched two sacks.
Owego, which entered the postseason with a perfect 15-0 record, now advances to the Class C state final four this weekend against Section 7’s Beekmantown.
While the season may not have ended the way they envisioned, the Sailors still have plenty to be proud of. “It was an extremely successful and satisfying season,” Head Coach Craig Solomon told the Peekskill Herald.
“In just our second year as a program, we won the sectional title, had the player of the year for Class C, and the defensive player of the year,” he added. Mager was named Class C Most Valuable Player, Lemus Villeda earned Class C Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and Solomon was recognized as Class C Coach of the Year.
Senior Raguso echoed that same pride in an interview with the Hendrick Hudson School District after the loss. “We’re not sad about this. This was a great season and we’re so proud of what we’ve done. This does not define us at all.”
On their road to the regional final, Hen Hud defeated Westlake Briarcliff 39-18 in the sectional semifinals, and beat Ardsley 13-12 in the Section 1 Class C final. The Sailors finish the 2025 season with an overall record of 14-4.
The Sailors will lose eight seniors from their historic 2025 squad to graduation, including Sofia Andrade, Mariana Garcia Ramirez, Oakley Gougelmann, Sasha Lemus Villeda, Lucy Mager, Carmen Marino, Kaitlyn Raguso, and Imani Yusuf.
Despite the departures, Coach Solomon remains positive. “Our seniors who started the program established a culture for years to come,” he said. “The future is bright.”
