On Tuesday, May 20, residents of the Hendrick Hudson community will head to the polls to vote on the school district’s proposed 2025-26 budget of $96,232,500 and to elect three trustees to the Board of Education for three-year terms.
There are four candidates vying for three open seats: Alexis Bernard, Allison Hooban, and incumbents Erica Mills and Jeremy Basso. Board trustee Stephanie Hickey, whose term ends June 30, 2025, is not seeking reelection.
Hendrick Hudson’s PTA Advocacy Committee will host a Board of Education Candidates Forum on Wednesday, May 14, at Hen Hud Free Library from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. This is your chance to meet the candidates and ask questions before the district vote on May 20.
A detailed review of the proposed budget by Superintendent of Schools Michael Tromblee is available HERE.
To help voters make informed decisions, the Peekskill Herald posed a series of questions to each candidate. We did not set a word limit for their responses.
Alexis Bernard

What is your vision for the Board of Education?
As a dedicated and experienced past board member, my vision is to maintain the momentum we’ve built—ensuring stability, accountability, and continued progress for the Hendrick Hudson School District. I’m running because I believe deeply in our community, our kids, and our schools. Over the past three years, we’ve righted the ship—bringing in strong leadership, implementing smart budgeting practices, and focusing on student-centered programs that reflect the diversity and needs of all learners. I’ve consistently fought for fiscal responsibility, academic excellence, and a safe, inclusive environment where every child feels seen, supported, and ready to learn.
What credentials qualify you to serve on the school board?
I bring experience, proven leadership, and a deep commitment to our community. Over the past few years, I’ve helped lead the Hendrick Hudson School District through a period of real change—guiding the board through a successful superintendent search, implementing zero-based budgeting, and passing a major capital project to improve our schools, and so much more. I understand the learning curve of board service and have worked hard to ensure my fellow board members are informed, included, and empowered to lead effectively. I was the Board President for two years – gaining a wealth of knowledge through that position. I bring a balanced perspective—I know the long-time residents and the newer families, and I understand the financial pressures facing both. I’ve supported investments that improve student outcomes, championed policies that foster inclusion and respect, and stayed focused on what matters most: great teaching, strong curriculum, student well-being, and fiscal responsibility. I listen, I ask tough questions, and I believe in data-driven decisions that move our district forward. Above all, I bring a genuine belief in Hen Hud and the people who make it great.
What are your priorities for the district, board, and students?
My top priorities are rooted in stability, student success, and accountability. For the district, I’m focused on continuing to implement our strategic plan, maintaining strong fiscal oversight, and ensuring our investments—whether in programs, curriculum, or facilities—directly benefit students. For the Board of Education, my priority is to foster a collaborative, informed, and nonpartisan team that holds the administration accountable, asks the right questions, and keeps student outcomes at the center of every decision. For our students, I’m committed to expanding enrichment opportunities, improving social-emotional support, and ensuring every child feels safe, valued, and ready to learn.
I also believe that supporting all of our staff—not just teachers—is critical to a strong school district. From classroom aides and counselors to custodians, secretaries, and cafeteria workers, every employee plays a vital role in creating a positive school climate. My goal is to make sure all staff feel respected, supported, and empowered to contribute to our students’ success.
What would you say are some of the most pressing issues in the district?
One of the most pressing issues in our district is maintaining consistency and continuity after a period of instability. We’ve made major progress—but real change takes time, and we need to stay the course. Fiscal responsibility is another ongoing challenge. I’ve worked to ensure that every dollar is justified through zero-based budgeting, and I’ll continue to fight for clear, responsible budgets that support classrooms and will always try to avoid raising taxes beyond the cap.
Another key issue is supporting student well-being and academic achievement. That means strengthening curriculum, expanding enrichment, and continuing to invest in programs like executive functioning support and inclusive clubs and sports. We also need to maintain a positive climate and culture—for both students and staff—so that schools are safe, supportive environments where learning thrives.
We must continue to maintain and enforce strong, up-to-date district policies. During my term, we conducted a long-overdue policy audit and created a Shared Decision-Making Policy to ensure that all voices—parents, students, and staff—are part of the process. Strong policies are the foundation of a well-run district and critical to ensuring transparency, fairness, and accountability at every level.
Serving on the Board of Education is a non-paid position. What motivates you to seek this volunteer role?
I’m running for the Board of Education again because I care deeply about this community and believe in the power of public education to change lives. This role may be volunteer, but the work we do has a real and lasting impact on students, families, and staff. For me, it comes down to a simple principle: service before self. I believe in stepping up, doing the work, and making decisions that put the needs of others—especially our kids—first.
Hen Hud is more than just where my kids go to school—it’s home. I know the people here, both lifelong residents and newer families, and I understand the challenges they face. Volunteering on the board is my way of giving back to a place that has given so much to my family. I’ve seen what happens when a district lacks direction, and I’ve also seen the transformation that’s possible with strong leadership and a shared vision. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made over the past few years, and I’m committed to continuing that work—focused on strong schools, smart budgets, and a safe, inclusive environment where every student can thrive.
What do you do for a living?
I help the world’s best brands tell their story through branded merchandise. I am the Senior Director of Business Development. I work with organizations from all industries, learn who they are, where they have been, and where they are headed. I believe I have been successful in my career because I truly listen to my clients and provide them with a cradle of comfort and build everlasting trust.
How long have you lived in the Hendrick Hudson School District?
I’ve essentially spent my entire life in this district—born and raised here, and a proud graduate of Hendrick Hudson. While I did live outside the district for a few years during college and shortly after, I always knew Hen Hud was where I wanted to return to start and raise my family. My husband, Chase Bernard, is also a Hen Hud graduate and a lifelong resident. His family has deep roots in the community, with his grandparents, parents, and siblings all attending Hendrick Hudson as well.
Do you have children currently enrolled in the school district?
Absolutely. I have three children – 1 High School Student, 2 Elementary Students.
Why did you have to step away from the board? What are you most proud of accomplishing during your time on the board?
I stepped away from the Board of Education when my term ended last year. It was a very long three years. I needed to focus on my family and do a deep reset. I’m not sure people understand just how much time and energy goes into this work. I served as Board President and that job is 24/7. The year off was rejuvenating. I learned that I actually really enjoy and miss the work of the school board. I’m eager to return and continue the work we’ve started.
During my time on the board, I’m most proud of the progress we made in key areas that have set the district up for long-term success:
- Successful Superintendent Search: We brought in new leadership that aligns with our vision for academic excellence and community growth.
- Supported New ELA Curriculum: We strengthened foundational literacy by adopting a new ELA program for elementary schools, ensuring our young learners are set up for success. What can we do next?
- Planned and Passed a $30 Million Capital Project: A major investment in our infrastructure to create safer, more effective learning environments.
- Conducted a Long-Overdue Policy Audit: This led to a comprehensive overhaul of district policies, including the creation of a Shared Decision-Making Policy to ensure that parents, teachers, and students all have a voice.
- Created Key Committees: I helped establish a Curriculum Committee and a Professional Development Committee to enhance educational practices across the district.
- Reduced Out-of-District Consultant Expenses: We worked to cut costs and reinvest those savings directly into student-focused programs.
- Established the Energy System Tax Stabilization Reserve: A forward-thinking financial move to ensure long-term fiscal stability and protect against unforeseen challenges.
These are just a few of the accomplishments I’m proud to have been part of. I’m committed to continuing this work, ensuring that Hen Hud remains on a path of growth, excellence, and sustainability for all students and staff.
Message to Voters
Throughout my time on the board and in life, I’ve learned how to face tough situations head-on—with a calm mindset, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to never giving up. I know how to stay grounded under pressure, and I’ve also learned that leadership isn’t about pushing my own opinions—it’s about truly listening. I make it a priority to hear all voices, weigh different perspectives, and make informed decisions that reflect what’s best for our whole community, especially our students. Hendrick Hudson deserves leaders who can handle challenges with resilience, clarity, and respect for every stakeholder.
Allison Hooban

What is your vision for the Board of Education?
The Board of Education should be the connection between our community and our schools. We should be listeners and leaders that will bring the Hendrick Hudson School District up to its fullest potential.
What credentials qualify you to serve on the school board?
I bring years of previous experience with non-profit boards, executive committees, and advisory committees, including two years on the Hen Hud Elementary School PTA Executive Board. I bring knowledge and experience to the district with Masters Degree in Social Work, and I currently work in early childhood education and special education. And my two kids are students in this district, so I bring a strong personal desire to make their education the best it can possibly be – for my kids and all of the children in this community.
What are your priorities for the district, board, and students?
There has been so much turmoil in this district in recent years, and our sense of community has suffered. We need to heal from all of the upheaval and change so that we can continue to grow. I want to be a strong and compassionate leader in our schools that both the families in the district and the teachers and staff in our schools can trust.
What are some of the most pressing issues in the district?
We have to find a long-term, sustainable solution for replenishing our operational budget. Our buildings need serious updates and upgrades. We need to listen to our teachers and work harder to recruit and retain talented teachers and staff.
Serving on the Board of Education is a non-paid position. What motivates you to seek this volunteer role?
I want our kids to have the highest quality education possible. I have given so much of my time and energy to my kid’s schools in the past few years as a volunteer, and now I want to scale that up and bring that energy and enthusiasm to all of the schools in the district as a Trustee on the Board of Education.
What do you do for a living?
I am a licensed Early Intervention Therapist, working with young children who have developmental and/or learning delays. And I am a local small business owner with a photography business that I’ve owned and operated for over 10 years.
How long have you lived in the Hendrick Hudson School District?
Since 2020.
Do you have any children currently enrolled in the school district?
I have a second grader who attends B-V [Buchanan-Verplanck] Elementary and a sixth grader at Blue Mountain Middle School.
Message to Voters
As a parent of younger children in this school district, my stake in this election is as high as it can possibly be. I want to make this one of the best school districts in Westchester – and I genuinely believe that we can be! But to reach our full potential we need selfless, dedicated leaders who put the students and the schools above all else. I want people to vote for me because they believe in me, and because they believe that I can help the Hen Hud School District reach that potential.
Erica Mills

What is your vision for the Board of Education?
As I seek re-election to the Hendrick Hudson Board of Education, my vision is to continue building a board that is collaborative, student-focused, and grounded in the values of transparency, equity, and academic excellence. Over the past term, we have laid important groundwork—supporting thoughtful budgeting by establishing a zero-based budget process, advancing student-centered policies, and strengthening community engagement. I’m committed to providing the continuity our district needs to see these efforts through, ensuring stability as we face both challenges and opportunities ahead. I believe the board should lead with integrity, listen closely to our community, and work in true partnership with families, educators, and staff to make Hendrick Hudson a place where every student can reach their full potential—intellectually, socially, and emotionally.
What credentials qualify you to serve on the school board?
I bring a deep commitment to our schools, a strong understanding of district history, and a proven track record of service. As a current trustee, now serving my first year as Board President and having previously served as Vice President, I’ve worked hard to support clear, student-focused governance and ensure our policies reflect both legal standards and the values of our community. I’ve taken on leadership roles to help guide the board through important decisions with transparency, collaboration, and consistency.
Professionally, I own and operate two local magazines, which requires strategic planning, budgeting, and collaboration—skills that directly inform my work on the board. I understand how to manage resources wisely, communicate effectively, and make decisions with both creativity and accountability. Most importantly, I’m a parent of two Hen Hud students—one a recent 2023 graduate, now thriving in college, and one currently a junior—so I know firsthand what families expect and need from our schools.
Beyond my board service, I’ve been an active member of the Hendrick Hudson community for over 15 years—volunteering through the PTA, chairing committees, and consistently showing up in support of our students and staff. This long-standing involvement has given me a deep perspective on where we’ve been and where we need to go. Continuity on the board is crucial, especially as we finalize the work of our strategic plan, finish up our policy audit, and navigate leadership transitions. I’m running for re-election to continue building on the progress we’ve made and to help guide the district with stability, vision, and heart.
What are your priorities for the district, board, and students?
My priorities center around ensuring that every student in Hendrick Hudson has access to a well-rounded, high-quality education that prepares them for success beyond graduation. For the district, I’m focused on maintaining strong academic programs, supporting staff, and using our resources responsibly to meet the needs of all learners. We are operating under real financial constraints, and I bring the ability to thoughtfully prioritize and make decisions that serve the entire district—balancing fiscal responsibility with the need to invest in what matters most for our students and schools.
For the board, my priority is to continue strengthening governance through transparency, collaboration, and clear communication—with each other and with our community. And for our students, I’m committed to advocating for programs that support their academic, social, and emotional growth—ensuring they feel seen, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential. Ultimately, my goal is to help lead a district where all students, families, and staff feel proud to belong.
What are some of the most pressing issues in the district?
Some of the most pressing issues in our district include maintaining fiscal responsibility while continuing to offer strong academic and extracurricular programs, supporting the social and emotional well-being of our students, and managing leadership transitions at both the administrative and board levels. Like many districts, we’re facing challenges related to shifting enrollment, tighter budgets, and evolving student needs. The financial impact of the Indian Point closure has only added complexity to our budget planning, making it even more critical to review our priorities with care and clarity.
At the same time, we must stay focused on our long-term goals—strengthening curriculum, advancing equity and inclusion, and improving communication between the district and the broader community. Addressing these challenges requires continuity, collaboration, and steady leadership. That’s the perspective and commitment I bring—and why I’m running for re-election.
Serving on the Board of Education is a non-paid position. What motivates you to seek this volunteer role?
I serve on the Board of Education because I care deeply about this community and the success of every student in it. Volunteering has always brought real joy and purpose to my life—whether I was planning school fairs, designing yearbooks, or running student clubs, giving my time has always felt like a privilege. This role is no different. As a parent, a local business owner, and an engaged community member, I’ve seen firsthand how important strong public schools are—not just for our children, but for the future of our town.
Serving on the board allows me to give back in a way that’s both meaningful and lasting. I’m invested in making sure every child in Hendrick Hudson has access to the same high-quality education that helped set my own children on a strong path. I believe in public service, in the power of thoughtful leadership, and in working together to build something better for all students. That’s why I continue to show up and do this work—with heart, purpose, and joy.
What do you do for a living?
I’m the publisher and owner of two local editions of Natural Awakenings Magazine. I oversee every aspect of the monthly publications—from editorial planning and design to budgeting, marketing, and distribution. My work blends creativity, leadership, and business management, all rooted in a strong commitment to community and connection. Running a small business has equipped me with valuable skills in organization, communication, and strategic decision-making—strengths I bring to my service on the Board of Education.
How long have you lived in the Hendrick Hudson School District?
I’ve lived in the Hendrick Hudson School District since 2001—over 21 years. This community has been home to my family, and I’ve been proud to watch my children grow up and benefit from the Hen Hud schools.
Do you have children currently enrolled in the school district?
Yes, I do. I have a daughter who is currently a junior at Hendrick Hudson High School and a son who graduated from Hen Hud and is now a college student at UNC Chapel Hill. My son’s experience at Hen Hud helped set him up for success in college, and I’m proud of the solid foundation he received here. As a parent, I have a personal understanding of what our students need to thrive, and I’m committed to ensuring that every student in our district has access to the same opportunities and support my children have had.
What are you most proud of accomplishing during your time on the board?
During my time on the Board of Education, I’m most proud of the significant strides we’ve made in creating a stronger, more accountable district. One of my key accomplishments has been bringing back the Curriculum Committee and Professional Development Committee, where we’ve prioritized high-quality, effective instruction and continuous growth for both students and staff. I’m also proud of our work finalizing the Strategic Plan, which is working to guide our district’s vision.
Additionally, we’ve moved to Zero-Based Budgeting, ensuring that every dollar is allocated with careful consideration to student needs and district goals. We’ve also been working on a full policy audit with NYSSBA to ensure our policies are clear, effective, and aligned with best practices. I’m especially proud of our work on the Shared Decision-Making policy, which ensures that all voices are heard in shaping the direction of our schools. Finally, I’ve helped establish several new committees to ensure that all stakeholders—students, parents, teachers, and staff—have a seat at the table and a voice in the decisions that affect them.
These accomplishments reflect the board’s commitment to transparency, collaboration, and student success, and I’m excited to continue this work in my next term.
Message to Voters
I am deeply committed to ensuring that our district remains a place where all students can thrive and reach their full potential. As a current trustee, I’ve seen firsthand how collaboration between the board, administrators, teachers, and the community leads to real, positive change. However, there is still much work to be done, and I’m eager to continue contributing my time, experience, and passion to this important role. I believe in the power of public education and the incredible impact it has on our students, families, and the entire community. Together, we can build an even stronger Hendrick Hudson, one where every student is supported, challenged, and inspired to succeed. Thank you for your continued trust and support.
Jeremy Basso

What is your vision for the Board of Education?
A governing body that writes policy to support students and administration with financial oversight to fulfill our obligations and allow our esteemed staff to provide world class opportunities for our students.
What credentials qualify you to serve on the school board?
I bring a clear ability to balance personal perspective with the broader needs of our community. I’m comfortable making thoughtful, and at times difficult, decisions that build consensus among stakeholders while keeping our focus on what matters most—the students and the district’s long-term success.
From a financial standpoint, I’ve founded, built, and led a business with a budget larger than that of the district. Navigating complex financial decisions isn’t new to me—it’s something I’ve lived every day, often in competition with both private equity-backed and publicly traded companies.
Through both my professional background and my prior service on the school board, I remain deeply committed to continuing the progress we began three years ago. I’ll work to ensure Hen Hud stays on the strong, student-centered path we’ve set—one rooted in stability, growth, and opportunity for all.
What are your priorities for the district, board, and students?
A welcoming environment where ALL students feel a sense of belonging, financial discipline to provide world class opportunities for students in a school that teachers and staff are excited to be a part of, and a community where children are proud of the facilities, comfortable in their schools and excited for their tomorrows!
What are some of the most pressing issues in the district?
Financial perspective : Maintaining and enhancing educational Opportunities throughout the spectrum of student needs while balancing associated impact on taxpayers.
Community perspective : Our goal is to thoughtfully balance diverse perspectives and needs—always keeping students at the heart of every decision. Our work is driven not by special interests, but by a shared commitment to doing what’s best for all children and ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive.
Serving on the Board of Education is a non-paid position. What motivates you to seek this volunteer role?
I am a graduate of Hen Hud and forever a Sailor. I have taken an active role in serving our community for many years both in terms of philanthropic activity and time commitments. As a current member of the BOE, we have made major strides as a district over the past 3 years and I would be honored to continue the work and represent our community in this important work for 3 more.
What do you do for a living?
After founding my business in 2010 and recently selling it to a global, multi-billion-dollar company, I’ve entered a new chapter—one where I’m fortunate to step back from the demands of daily operations. While I remain active as an investor, what matters most to me now is having the precious time to be more present as a husband and father, and to truly enjoy these meaningful moments with my wife and children.
How long have you lived in the Hendrick Hudson School District?
I started at Hendrick Hudson in second grade, and the district quickly became a central part of my life and identity. After graduating, I went on to college and began my career working on Wall Street. Eventually, I made the decision to return to this community—a place that shaped who I am—to raise my own family.
Do you have children currently enrolled in the school district?
Not currently.
What are you most proud of accomplishing during your time on the board?
Overall, I’m most proud of the leadership and collaborative work I’ve been part of over the past three years. Highlights include collaborating on policy committee to establish a comprehensive policy review that resulted in the addition or revision of over 130 much-needed policies, establishing a budget-neutral full-time safety coordinator position, and working with local officials to help pass the stop-arm camera program into County law. We’ve prioritized responsible spending to enhance academic opportunities while carefully managing resources, significantly reduced our reliance on outside consultants, and continued rebuilding our administrative team—one I believe is now among one of the strongest in Westchester County.
Message to Voters
It’s true that my children are not currently enrolled in the Hendrick Hudson School District. That decision was made thoughtfully for personal family reasons, and I believe it’s important to respect the privacy of those choices. What I can say with confidence is that this reality offers a unique and valuable perspective.
If elected to serve another term, I would continue to be the only Board of Education trustee without a child currently in the district—allowing me to approach decisions without the potential for personal bias. My focus remains solely on what’s best for all students, not just my own.
My commitment to Hen Hud runs deep. I’m a proud graduate, a longtime resident, and an active supporter of initiatives that strengthen and uplift our community. Much of my volunteer and philanthropic work—both locally and beyond—is in support of children and families who have no direct connection to my own. That doesn’t make the work any less meaningful; in fact, it reflects a belief in service rooted in purpose, not proximity.
Seeking a second term on the Board is not about personal gain—it’s about continuing the work of improving educational outcomes, strengthening the district, and honoring the trust our community places in its leadership. I care deeply about this district and its future, and I’m committed to helping every student succeed.
