Girls Lacrosse

It’s been a challenging start to the season for Hen Hud’s varsity girls lacrosse team.
On Tuesday, April 8, the Sailors lost to Pelham, 18-14. Pelham’s Taylor Green scored seven goals and broke the Pelham High School career goals record of 190. For the Sailors, Kayla McCarthy had six goals and two assists, while Paige Montgomery had five goals and one assist. Gianna Gagliardi contributed with two goals and Danica Kostulas scored her first career goal. Mia Dietz had five saves in goal for Hen Hud.
Later in the week, Hen Hud endured another tough loss, this time against Fox Lane, 18-9.
The Sailors currently face a 0-5 streak. Up next, the girls will play Horace Greeley on Saturday, April 12, at home at 1 p.m, followed by a matchup against Carmel on Monday, April 14, at home at 4 p.m. The varsity and junior varsity girls lacrosse teams are scheduled to have a fundraiser on Tuesday, April 15, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. in Room 109 at Hendrick Hudson High School.
Boys Lacrosse
Despite losses to Scarsdale and Tappan Zee, Hen Hud’s goalkeeper Aidan Mazzoni has stood out with strong performances this season. Mazzoni was recently nominated for Lohud’s Boys Lacrosse Player of the Week for Week 2.
On Wednesday, April 9, Hen Hud fell to Pelham, 7-2. Drew Hiltsley and Dean Pastolove each scored for the Sailors, while Mazzoni had 25 saves in net.
Hen Hud (0-3) hits the road on Saturday, April 12, to face Byram Hills at 11 a.m. The boys will also play Somers on Tuesday, April 15, at home at 5 p.m.
Flag Football

Hen Hud is making waves early in the season, thanks in part to the efforts of standout seniors Kaitlyn Raguso and Lucy Mager, both of whom made Lohud’s Flag Football Watchlist. Raguso also recently earned a nomination for Lohud’s Flag Football Player of the Week for March 27-April 5.
On April 4, Hen Hud beat Bronxville on the road, 25-6. The Sailors controlled the game from the start, leading 25-0 until the final minutes of the game. Lucy Mager completed 15 out of 25 passes for 173 yards, rushed 48 yards, and had three touchdowns plus an extra point. Kaitlyn Raguso was the team’s leading receiver with seven catches for 98 yards and had two touchdowns. Maria Ribeiro added a rushing touchdown and an extra point while also leading the team with nine tackles. Kate Stratton chipped in with an interception.
.The following week, on Monday, April 7, the Sailors got a shutout victory over Irvington, 36-0. For Hen Hud, Lucy Mager completed 12 out of 20 passes for 147 yards, rushed for 60 yards, and had five touchdowns (three in the first half). Kaitlyn Raguso had seven receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns, Sofia Andrade had one catch for 25 yards, a touchdown, and one interception. Maria Ribeiro added three catches for 26 yards, Kate Stratton had one catch for 10 yards, and Nicole Facciolo rushed for 19 yards and led the team with seven tackles. Arianna Byers rushed twice for 11 yards and had a touchdown.
On Thursday, April 10, Hen Hud won again against Dobbs Ferry, 52-12. Lucy Mager completed 10 out of 13 passes for 178 yards and had four touchdowns plus two extra points. Nicole Facciolo had a 66 yard rushing touchdown and Maria Ribeiro had a touchdown run of 16 yards. Kaitlyn Raguso had four receptions for 89 yards and two touchdowns. She also had two interceptions, one of which resulted in a touchdown for Hen Hud. Arianna Byers also contributed with two receptions for 65 yards and two touchdowns. Imani Yusuf had an interception and Facciolo and Rodraya Pope both had nine tackles
Hen Hud currently holds a record of four wins and one loss. The Sailors will play Lakeland at Lakeland High School on Friday, April 11, at 6 p.m, followed by Mahopac on Monday, April 14 at home at 11 a.m.
Spring Track
Hen Hud participated in the Pirate Relays on April 5 at Pearl River High School. For the boys, Olivier Birotte finished third in 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.72, while Perry Quaye placed third (5-4) and Hunter Kennedy-Brown placed fifth (5-2) in the freshman/sophomore high jump. For the girls, Alexandra Pappas finished fifth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 9:15.84, Monica Rocha placed first in the novice pole vault at 6-6, and Theresa Gyapong placed third in the freshman/sophomore shot put at 27-10.
On April 9, Hen Hud competed in the Coach Sing Invitational at White Plains High School. For the boys, Vivek Sekhri finished fourth in the 1,600-meter run in 4:49.95, Oliver Birotte finished second in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.56, Taiten Robinson finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.86, and Vincent Valdes Cabada placed fourth in the long jump at 19-6.5. For the girls, Nisaa Emery finished fifth in the 100-meter dash in 13.13, Isabelle Carvalho finished third in the 1,500-meter run (5:24.92) and first in the 3,000-meter run (11:29.33), Isabella Veloz, Nisaa Emery, Michelle Ikokwu, and Elyse Smith finished second in the 4×100 meter relay in 53.51, and Chloe Howard won the 1,500-meter race walk with a time of 7:29.55, and Lexi Corcoran was fifth in 9:01.74.
The Sailors will next compete at the 2025 New York Relays at Icahn Stadium in Randall’s Island on Friday, April 11, followed by the Cornwall Dragon Relays on Saturday, April 12 at Monroe-Woodbury High School. Next week (April 16), Hen Hud will host the 2025 Hen Hud Field Fest, where multiple schools are expected to compete.
Softball
On Friday, April 4, Hen Hud kicked off the 2025 season with a 10-0 home win over Croton, led by Emma Barbelet, who pitched a three-hitter with 14 strikeouts over seven innings. Barbelet also contributed with two hits and three runs batted in (RBIs). Angelina Carbone chipped in with a single, a double, and a RBI in two hits, while Emma Johannsen had an RBI in two hits. Kiely Morley and McKenna Silverman each recorded a single and had two RBIs. Kat Devine had a single and an RBI, and Janae Walker contributed a double.
The Sailors returned to action on Wednesday, April 9, picking up a 4-2 away victory over Eastchester. Hen Hud’s Barbelet allowed just one earned run on six hits while striking out six. She also had three hits at the plate. In this game, Carbone had a single and a double in two hits, Morley had a single and triple in two hits, Walker had a home run and an RBI, and Johannsen added a hit and an RBI.
On April 10, Hen Hud got a convincing 6-1 victory over Tappan Zee. Barbelet had five strikeouts, no walks, and just one earned run on four hits. Walker racked up five RBIs, a three run home run, and a double. Lillian Tomlinson and Bella Both hit doubles, and Angelina Carbone had a single and a RBI.
The game against John Jay Cross River on Monday, April 7, was postponed.
Hen Hud now sits at 3 wins for the season. Up next, the Sailors will host Riverside on Friday, April 11, at 4:30 p.m, followed by an away game against Pearl River on Tuesday, April 15, at 12 p.m. The girls will also play Brewster on the road on Wednesday, April 16 at 3 p.m.
Baseball
The Hen Hud varsity baseball team opened its season with a 7-3 loss to Yorktown on April 4. Jack Hiltsley and Connor Leach led the Sailors in the batter’s box, with Leach going 2-for-3 and driving in a run.
On Monday, April 7, the Sailors lost to Brewster, 12-6, at Dutchess Stadium. Brewster’s Chase Prohaska went 3-for-4 with a triple, a single, a home run, and four RBIs, while Justin Parodi went 2-for-4.
Two days later, Hen Hud suffered their third away defeat, losing 11-0 to Westlake.
“Overall, we are a young team, starting five underclassmen. Looking forward to the progress we make throughout the season,” said head coach Van Vourtiotis when contacted by the Herald. Vourtiotis has been leading the Sailors since 2018.
Up next, Hen Hud (0-3) will compete in a weekend tournament at Briarcliff High School (April 11 and 12). The Sailors will also face Tappan Zee for their first home game of the season on Monday, April 14, at 12 p.m., followed by a matchup against Lakeland on Tuesday, April 15, at Lakeland High School at 11 a.m. The teams will face off again on Thursday, April 17, at Sunset Park at 11 am.
Boys Tennis
A match against Mahopac on Tuesday, April 8, was cancelled due to wind and frigid temperatures, the third cancellation of the season.
Hen Hud returned to action on Thursday, April 10, with a 6-1 victory over Carmel. According to head coach Bradley Fredman, the Sailors had standout singles performances from Ezra Smith and Anderson Rench, and doubles from Jericho Shea/Musa Abdallah, Xair Lesende/Seth Otero, Jacob Markovitch/Adrian Szostak, and Ben Kushnir/Max Parker.
The Sailors are off next week due to spring break.
Golf
Six players make up Hen Hud’s 2025 varsity golf team. They include: seniors Andy McNamee, Jacob Brand, and Luca Tucci, juniors Nick DeFrenza and Michael Socorro, and freshman Ryder Boston.
The Sailors opened the season on Monday, April 7, with losses in a tri-match against Haldane and Clarkstown South. The final scores were 269 for Hen Hud, 268 for Haldane, and 213 for Clarkstown South. Hen Hud’s Andy McNamee and Ryder Boston both carded team best scores of 47. According to head coach Derek Kisslinger, that marked a career best for Boston and tied McNamee’s personal best from last year.
On Thursday, April 1, Hen Hud lost to Putnam Valley 245-279. In that game, McNamee had the lowest score with a 49, while Nick DeFrenza shot a 54.
The golf team is off next week due to spring break.
College Corner

Women’s Lacrosse – Division I: On Sunday (April 6), the St. Bonaventure University women’s lacrosse team lost to Davidson College, 10-8. Prior to the game, the team honored their seniors, including Fiona McGovern (Hen Hud Class of 2021). McGovern contributed one goal and three assists during the game.
St. Bonaventure then played George Mason University on April 9, and won, 16-11. In this game, McGovern scored three goals and got two assists. She now ranks second on the program’s all-time points leaderboard with 202.
Women’s Lacrosse – Division 1: After strong performances against the University of Michigan and the University of Detroit Mercy – where she recorded a combined 18 saves – Maddie Porter (Hen Hud Class of 2023) was named the Mid-American Conference Goalkeeper of the Week on April 8. This marks the third time this season she has earned the accolade (March 4 and March 11). Porter currently has 124 saves for the season – eight away from tying her record of 132 set last year.
Women’s Lacrosse – Division I: For Iona University, Kira Varada (Hen Hud Class of 2021) contributed four goals and two assists against Merrimack College (April 5) and two goals and one assist against Manhattan University (April 9). Her team currently sits at the top of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Riding – Division III: Skidmore College’s horseback riding team secured its trip to the upcoming Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association National Championships, winning the Zone 2 final earlier this week. At this event, Stella Allen (Hen Hud Class of 2023) placed second in the Team Novice Equitation.
Track & Field – Division III: Gettysburg College finished fourth at the Millersville Metrics last weekend. Olivia Taylor (Hen Hud Class of 2021) came in ninth in the pole vault with a personal-best and centennial conference (CC) – qualifying vault of 2.90 meters which ties with sixth in Gettysburg College’s program history. She also placed fifth in the triple jump with a CC-qualifying leap of 10.05 meters.
