The Peekskill Riots. Episode Three: Up on the Hillside, Down in the Hollow
Local filmmaker Jon Scott Bennett has been taking us back in time, to the summer weekend evenings of Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, September 4, 1949 in a five-part docu-series, The Peekskill Riots.
On August 27, 1949, singer, songwriter and political activist, Paul Robeson was to hold a concert 2.3 miles outside of Peekskill, N.Y. in the Town of Cortlandt, at a location known then as Lakeland Acres. The concert was for the benefit of the Civil Rights Congress and advertised to the Jewish and Black working-class, summer residents in the Hudson Valley. However, local residents, fueled by racist and anti-Semetic sentiments and who disliked Robeson’s campaign for civil rights, organized a protest and parade to stop Robeson’s concert. What transpired was a riot, in which men, women, and children hoping to attend Paul Robeson’s concert were attacked. Rocks, bottles, and other projectiles were thrown, while cars were turned over with passengers inside. All of this occurred under the light of a burning cross, as years of bubbling hatred in Peekskill and some of the surrounding communities finally burst into a full fledged riot.
Join Jon Scott Bennett at The Field Library this Wednesday, September 18 at 6:30 p.m. for an exclusive screening of Episode Three of The Peekskill Riots.
