Action has slowed down for winter sports due to the holiday break. An expanded Red Devils Report will return on January 14.
Boys’ Basketball
Peekskill endured two tough losses this past weekend while competing in the Nyack High School Red & Black tournament.
On Friday, Dec. 27, the Peekskill boys were left stunned after falling short to Spring Valley, 68-61, in their opening game of the tournament. In that game, Peekskill’s Isaiah Crawford scored 27 points and Jaden Chavis scored 15.
The following day, on Dec. 28, things did not get better for the Red Devils. In a consolation game against Roosevelt, Peekskill was beaten by a score of 86-72.
For his impressive performances over the course of both games, Peekskill’s Isaiah Crawford was named an All-Tournament player.
The Peekskill boys will compete in the 7th Annual Crusader Classic/Slam Dunk Showcase this weekend at the Westchester County Center in White Plains. Their only game will be against Woodlands on Friday, Jan. 3 at 8 p.m.
(Tickets for this event are still available. All tickets must be purchased in person at either Stepinac HS or Iona Prep in the main office from Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-2 p.m. or at the Westchester County Center Box Office from Tuesday-Friday at 10 a.m.-5 p.m.)
The Red Devils will return to competitive action on Monday, Jan. 6, against Harrison at Peekskill High School at 6:15 p.m.
Winter Track
On Friday, Dec. 27, Peekskill’s Winter Track & Field team competed in the 47th Annual Pearl River Holiday Track and Field Festival at Rockland Community College.
At this event, Arisa Specce and Imani Felder shone for the Red Devils. Specce placed second in the 1,500 m race walk with a time of 8:55.11 and Felder placed second in the high jump at 4-08.
For the boys, Jermaine Carter placed fourth in the 300 meter race at 40.80 and fifth in the 600 meter race at 1:37.84, according to head coach Oscar Moscoso.
Over the weekend, Specce and Felder were named in a list of girl indoor track stars expected to excel this season by Lohud’s Nancy Haggerty.
Up next for the Red Devils is a meet at Rockland Community College on Monday, Jan. 6 at 4:30 p.m.
Dance
The Peekskill High School dance team rocked the Westchester County Center this past weekend.
During halftime of the Westchester Knicks vs Motor City Cruise basketball game, audience members were treated to a dance performance by the Peekskill dance team. The team, which is led by Coach Patricia Johnson, previously performed at the County Center earlier this year during the boys basketball postseason run.
When reached for comment, Johnson revealed the opportunity to perform at the county center was entirely because of PHS principal Dr. Jenna Ferris.
“Dr. Ferris saw the potential in our team and believed in us enough to submit a video entry on our behalf. We were thrilled when we learned we’d been selected. It felt like a huge validation of all the hard work and dedication we’ve put into the team since its inception a year ago.”
Recalling the performance, Johnson said “The energy in the arena was electric. The entire team felt a deep sense of pride, not only because we got to showcase our talents, but also because it was a moment we could share together as a group.”
“We’re incredibly grateful to Dr. Ferris and The Westchester Knicks for giving us this opportunity, and it really motivated us to keep pushing ourselves and striving for even bigger goals. This experience has definitely brought us closer as a team and inspired us to continue pursuing our passion for dance, no matter the size of the stage.”
