In Verplanck, a fundraising event will bring together the local community on Sixth Street on Saturday, May 2. The gathering, organized by the Verplanck Senior Citizens’ Club, will take place at the Verplanck Community Center, a space that serves as a hub for senior activities in the Town of Cortlandt. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m.
The activity, known as the Penny Social Fundraiser, will include raffles, sales and donations. The call for participation has been circulated through a flier presenting it as a family-friendly event. Attendees can expect ticket raffles, gift baskets, homemade baked goods, custom jewelry and cash prizes, along with a “scratch-off tree” featuring lottery tickets.

No prior registration is required for the event. The objective of the activity is to sustain the annual operations carried out by the club. Gloria Boyd, Vice President and Fundraising Chair for 2026 at the Verplanck Senior Citizens’ Club, shared details about the work carried out by the organization. Among the activities she highlighted are monthly cash and food contributions to the food bank, distribution of grocery bags to families in need and funding of school supplies each September. Additionally, they provide Easter baskets and seasonal donations. They also distribute supermarket gift cards and complete meals during the Thanksgiving season.
However, the support is not limited to social programs. Boyd mentions that they also make annual donations to local fire departments, emergency services (EMS) and veterans organizations, including the American Legion. Contributions to the Veterans Administration system in Montrose, New York, are also reported, as well as emergency assistance to local houses of worship in situations of community crisis.
In addition to Boyd, the club’s leadership includes Maureen Hierspiel as president, Jackie Conklin as second vice president, Maureen Hegarty as secretary and Angie Chalk as treasurer.
Beyond the May 2 event, the Verplanck Senior Citizens’ Club maintains a constant schedule of community activities. Among them is its annual Christmas dinner. In 2025, it brought together club members and local residents. This program is part of regular meetings, seasonal events and support initiatives organized throughout the year, consolidating its presence as an active local assistance network.
On this occasion, the event has not been promoted through digital platforms. The club has carried out a physical campaign targeting local businesses, residents through direct mail and word-of-mouth distribution. For more information about the event or to make contributions, the club lists its mailing address as P.O. Box 456, Verplanck, NY 10596.
