Kindness Is in Your Blood will not be only a phrase. Two American Red Cross blood drives will take place in Peekskill to demonstrate that kindness is more than a campaign or a slogan. On March 13 and March 16, two locations in the city will be opened for blood donation. The first event will take place on Friday, March 13, from 12 noon to 5 p.m., at the clubhouse of the Peekskill Yacht Club, located at 1 Travis Point.

Three days later, the campaign will continue in the cultural heart of the city. On Monday, March 16, during the same hours, the historic Paramount Hudson Valley Theater will open its stage for the blood donation drive. The event will take place in the stage area. There, where concerts and performances are usually presented, the space will be transformed for a few hours into a setting of generosity for people who depend on blood donations.
In the United States, the American Red Cross is the largest supplier of blood to hospitals. It provides about 40 percent of the national blood supply, which is used in nearly 2,500 hospitals and transfusion centers. Each year, the health care system performs transfusions for approximately 3.65 million patients, while nearly 29,000 units of red blood cells are used every day, in addition to thousands of units of platelets and plasma.
Blood donations benefit a wide range of patients: people with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, victims of serious accidents or trauma, mothers experiencing complications during childbirth, patients with sickle cell disease, and individuals undergoing major surgeries or transplants. In many cases, a single donation can help more than one patient because blood is separated into different components for various medical treatments.
The organization recommends scheduling an appointment in advance through its website to facilitate the process and reduce waiting times. However, the drive is often open to donors without an appointment if capacity allows. The logistics are simple. The complete process usually takes about one hour, including registration, a brief medical screening, and the donation. Under normal conditions, the body replenishes the donated fluid volume in less than 24 hours.
The Peekskill Yacht Club shared a social media post stating that donors may receive a $15 digital gift card sent by email for successful donations, along with an A1C test, which is used to evaluate average blood glucose levels. The Red Cross also promotes its Blood Donor App, which allows users to schedule appointments, complete the RapidPass health questionnaire in advance, and follow the journey of their donated blood.
