Girls Soccer

The Hen Hud varsity girls soccer team experienced a week of highs and lows on the pitch.
On Oct. 3, the Sailors fell to Westlake on the road, 4-2. Fotini Schattman and eighth-grader Julianna Povella both found the back of the net, with freshman Kinsley Steinhiser adding an assist.
Three days later, on Oct. 6, Hen Hud celebrated Senior Night with a 4-1 home victory over Nanuet. Prior to kickoff, seniors Fotini Schattman, Yorgia Schattman, Shayla Cachay, Haley Morris, Mallory Parks, and Jonna Rivera were all honored for their contributions to the program.
Steinhiser opened the scoring just seven minutes in, finishing calmly on a breakaway after a clever through ball from Povella. Twenty minutes later, Yorgia Schattman doubled the lead, converting a penalty into the bottom-left corner. With 30 seconds left in the half, Povella added a third goal, assisted by Skyler Selkin.
The Sailors wasted no time extending their lead in the second half, as Steinhiser struck again just 12 seconds after kickoff, pressing high and finishing confidently. Hen Hud nearly secured its second clean sheet of the season, but with 13 minutes remaining, Nanuet’s Angiel Figueroa scored a long-range chip that caught goalkeeper Ella Henderson off her line.
The following day, Oct. 7, Hen Hud’s resilience was tested in a home matchup against Sleepy Hollow. The Sailors fell behind 2-0 within the first 15 minutes before Melina D’Itra, recently called up from junior varsity, pulled one back off a Steinhiser cross. Sleepy Hollow restored its two-goal lead early in the second half, but Hen Hud battled back. With 15 minutes remaining, Steinhiser finished a breakaway set up by Povella. Less than two minutes later, the pair reversed roles – Steinhiser slipped Povella through, and she finished neatly into the bottom-left corner. The dynamic duo remained lively throughout, and the game ended in a 3-3 draw.
Hen Hud closed out the stretch with a 3-1 road win at Edgemont on Oct. 9. Steinhiser scored twice and added an assist, while Povella tallied one goal. Bridget Couch and Yorgia Schattman each contributed an assist.
Steinhiser currently leads the team with 10 goals and six assists, followed by Povella with six goals and two assists.
Now 4-8-1 on the season, Hen Hud returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 11, for an away match at Ardsley at 5 p.m. The Sailors will then travel to Walter Panas on Wednesday, Oct. 15, also at 5 p.m.
Boys Soccer
It was a tough week for the Hen Hud boys soccer team as their winless streak continued against a series of strong opponents.
On Oct. 4, the Sailors were overpowered at home by John Jay–Cross River, falling 12–0. Hen Hud struggled to generate chances offensively, hampered by several key absences. Captains Juan Espinoza and Perry Quaye were both sidelined with injuries, while John Dominguez and goalkeeper Nick Defrenza were unavailable for the match.
Two days later, on Oct. 6, Hen Hud fell 6-0 at home to Byram Hills. The struggles continued on Oct. 8, when the Sailors dropped a 4–0 decision on the road to Walter Panas.
Hen Hud showed signs of life in their next outing (Oct. 9) but ultimately came up short in a 3-1 home loss to New Rochelle B. Michael Arias provided the lone goal – the team’s first in six games.
Currently 2-10-1 on the season, the Sailors will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Oct. 15, when they travel to Nanuet for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff. The following day, they’ll hit the road again to face John Jay-Cross River at 5:15 p.m.
Football

Hen Hud football dropped to 2–3 on the season after a hard-fought 27–24 home loss to Haldane on Oct. 2.
Quarterback Kane Wamack completed 14 of 21 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown. Justin Parkes had a strong all-around performance, rushing 15 times for 75 yards and two touchdowns, adding three receptions for 34 yards, and contributing six tackles and an interception on defense. Hunter Kennedy-Brown caught seven passes for 98 yards and a touchdown while recording three tackles. Vinny Valdes added a 34-yard reception and four tackles. On defense, Shawn O’Mara led the way with 10 tackles, while Yamil Melendez made eight tackles, including four for loss.
In other news, Shawn O’Mara has been selected as a Week 6 nominee for USA Football’s Heart of a Giant award, presented by the New York Giants and Hospital for Special Surgery. O’Mara will compete against other Week 6 nominees to become one of six finalists, with the opportunity to earn a $1,000 equipment donation for the Hen Hud football program.

The USA Football Heart of a Giant Award recognizes high school students from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut who demonstrate an unparalleled work ethic and passion for the game of football.
Hen Hud (2–3) will look to bounce back when it hosts Hastings on Friday, Oct. 10, at 6 p.m. The game will also honor Hen Hud’s senior varsity players.
Field Hockey

On Oct. 4, Hen Hud fell to Arlington at home, 5–0. The Sailors were overwhelmed early, as Arlington built a four-goal lead by halftime and added a fifth in the third quarter.
Things improved two days later (Oct. 6), when Hen Hud battled Rye Neck on the road, narrowly dropping a 3-2 decision. Carleigh Ortiz and Chloe Haseltine each scored for the Sailors, with assists from Eva and Nicole Facciolo. Goalkeeper Kelsey Wong recorded five saves in the effort.
Hen Hud bounced back the following day, Oct. 7, with a decisive 3-0 win at Byram Hills. Ortiz led the way with a goal and two assists, while Haseltine and Julia Freitas each added a goal. Nicole Facciolo contributed an assist, and Wong earned the shutout with one save.
The Sailors now stand at 4-4-2 on the season. They’ll visit Brewster on Friday, Oct. 10, at 4 p.m., before hosting Our Lady of Lourdes on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. Hen Hud will then travel to John Jay East Fishkill on Tuesday, Oct. 14 (5:15 p.m.), and Ossining on Wednesday, Oct. 15 (6:30 p.m.).
Girls Volleyball
The Sailors opened the week on a high note, sweeping Sleepy Hollow 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-13). Olivia Scarmozzino led the way with 20 service points and two kills. Julia Nelson tallied 12 kills, seven service points, five digs, two assists, and an ace. Anabel Delgado contributed 13 digs, 10 assists, three service points, two kills, and two aces. Zoe Santana added six digs, four aces, and two assists, while Isabella Gurgigno chipped in seven assists, six digs, six service points, four kills, and two aces.
Two days later (Oct. 8), Hen Hud couldn’t maintain their momentum, falling to Blind Brook on the road, 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-9).
The Sailors bounced back the following day (Oct. 9) with a hard-fought 3-0 victory at Irvington, winning by scores of 25–19, 25–19, and 25–22. Nelson again led the charge with 18 digs, 12 service points, 11 kills, seven assists, and five aces. Gurgigno posted 11 digs, six kills, four service points, and three assists, while Delgado added 10 assists, six digs, and one kill. Santana contributed 13 digs, 10 service points, three kills, and three assists. Adriana Acevedo recorded 10 digs, six service points, and two assists, and Kate Stratton added three blocks, two service points, and a dig.
Hen Hud (7–7) will next host Walter Panas on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 4:30 p.m.
Boys Volleyball

Three wins in a row – Croton/Briarcliff/Hen Hud was on fire this week.
On Oct. 3, the co-op squad swept Greenburgh 3-0 (25-7, 25-17, 25-13) at Hendrick Hudson High School. The match doubled as Senior Night for Hen Hud’s Anthony Davis and Seth DeLeon. Davis led the charge with 15 kills and three aces, while Will McKinley added eight kills. Croton’s Yanik Ekambaram tallied 17 service points and two kills, and teammate Julian Chinn contributed seven kills. Phoenix Hunt finished with 15 assists, five kills, and four aces, while DeLeon anchored the defense with 14 digs.
The team kept rolling with a 3-0 road win over Sleepy Hollow on Oct. 7 (25-9, 25-9, 25-17). Ekambaram posted 10 kills, five service points, and two aces. Briarcliff’s Tristian Tsou recorded 11 service points, 11 assists, and five aces. McKinley added 13 service points, eight aces, and five kills, while Davis chipped in seven kills, two service points, and two aces. Chinn added three kills, three service points, and two aces. Croton’s Jax Weintraub notched six assists, three service points, and three aces, while Hunt contributed four assists and a kill.
Croton/Briarcliff/Hen Hud capped off the week with another sweep, defeating Ossining 3-0 on Oct. 9. (25-10, 25-15, 25-13). Davis led the offense with 12 kills, while Ekambaram added 11 service points and six kills. McKinley totaled 10 service points, eight kills, and two blocks. Chinn contributed four kills, three blocks, and an assist. Hunt dished out 13 assists and added three kills, Weintraub recorded 11 assists and three aces, and Tsou added three assists and one ace. Briarcliff’s Xavier DiMartino rounded out the effort with a block and an assist.
Up next, Croton/Briarcliff/Hen Hud (9-2) will travel to Fox Lane on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m., before playing Ossining on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 5 p.m. at Briarcliff High School.
Cross Country
Hen Hud’s varsity cross country team competed in a league meet at Croton Point Park on Oct. 7, where several athletes earned top honors.
The boys team finished first out of five schools, led by Victor Delgado, who won the 5,000-meter race in 16:12.30, earning All-League recognition. Other All-League honorees included Joshua Weinstein (2nd, 17:29.70), Vivek Sekhri (3rd, 17:47.20), Jackson Morley (4th, 18:00.30), and Cosmo Vogt (12th, 18:45.20). Daniel Valdez received an honorable mention, placing 17th with a time of 19:16.00.
The girls team finished second out of four schools. Oona McManus led the way, placing second in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 21:02.00, earning All-League honors. Also named All-League were Isabelle Carvalho (6th, 22:12.20), Rachael Anderson (10th, 22:43.30), and Chloe Howard (12th, 22:52.40). Sofia Klinger earned an honorable mention with a 21st-place finish in 25:01.60.
Up next, the Sailors will compete in the Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
Girls Tennis

On Oct. 6, the Hen Hud girls tennis team fell 4-1 to Keio. The following day, they returned to action at Rye Neck and were leading 2-1 when the match was suspended due to darkness.
On Oct. 9, the Sailors picked up a 4-1 road win over Leffell. Hen Hud will host Walter Panas for their final match of the regular season on Friday, Oct. 10, at 4:30 p.m.
This weekend, several Hen Hud athletes will compete in postseason play. In the Section 1 doubles tournament, which begins Saturday, Oct. 11, at Harrison High School, Angelina Carbone and Katherine Devine will face Neve Mulcahy and Maya Bautista of White Plains at 9:30 a.m. At the same time, Emma Barbelet and Emma Johannsen will take on Kayla Clinton and Ryan Cherry of Irvington. Winners from those matches will advance to the next round that same evening.
In the singles tournament, Victoria Szostak earned a first-round bye and will play the winner of Layna Delk (Byram Hills) vs. Mali Cerease (Mt. Vernon) on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 9 a.m.
The team sectional tournament will begin on Thursday, Oct. 16.
Girls Swimming
The Croton/Hen Hud co-op swim team dropped two meets this past week. On Oct. 3, the team fell 97-71 to Blind Brook/Rye/Rye Neck.
The co-op team also lost to John Jay Cross River/North Salem on Oct. 8 at home. Despite the setback, several swimmers posted strong performances. Jillian Forth earned a personal best in the 50-meter freestyle, finishing third with a time of 32.52 seconds. Sofia Donikyan placed second in the 100-meter butterfly with a season-best 1:19.53 and also took second in the 100-meter breaststroke at 1:21.66.
Croton/Hen Hud (0-6) will host Carmel, Mahopac, and Putnam Valley on Friday, Oct. 10, at 4:30 p.m. The team will then travel to Sarah Lawrence College to face Bronxville/Tuckahoe on Thursday, Oct. 16, also at 4:30 p.m.
College Watch
Mens Soccer – Division II: Helmer Herrera (Class of 2025) scored his first collegiate goal for John Jay College in a 2-1 loss to Brooklyn College on Oct. 8.
Womens Volleyball – Division II: On Oct. 4, Shepherd University beat Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania, 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 25-22). In that game, junior outside hitter Amya Davis (Class of 2023) contributed nine kills, a pair of aces, and eight digs.
Womens Lacrosse – Division II: On Oct. 3, William Jewell College, a Division II institution competing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, announced the appointment of Mackenzie Porter (Class of 2018) as head coach of the women’s lacrosse team. Porter joins Jewell after spending the past year coaching with the local Park Girls Lacrosse Club.
Field Hockey – Division III: Union College’s Rowan Dapson (Class of 2024) scored a game-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining, lifting her team to a 3–2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Oct. 8.
