Boys Lacrosse
Two wins in one week – Hen Hud’s boys lacrosse team is responding back after their tough start to the season.
On Tuesday, April 22, Hen Hud beat Carmel at home, 10-7. Drew Hiltsley led the Sailors offensively with five goals, while James McManus notched the most assists with five. He also contributed two goals. In net, Aidan Mazzoni had 22 saves.
Two days later (April 24), the Sailors defeated Croton-Harmon, 7-5, through three goals from James McManus, and two from Dean Pastolove and Mason Dietz. Aidan Mazzoni had another big game in goal with 18 saves.
For their next games, Hen Hud (3-4) will travel to Fox Lane High School to take on the Foxes on Saturday, April 26, at 1 p.m, followed by a home game against Cardinal Hayes on Tuesday, April 29, at 4:30 p.m. The boys will also play Lakeland/Panas on Thursday, May 1, at Lakeland High School at 6:30 p.m.
Girls Lacrosse

Hen Hud narrowly defeated Lakeland/Panas, 14-12, on Tuesday, April 22. The win was powered by four goals from Paige Montgomery and Gianna Gagliardi, three from Kayla McCarthy, two from Carleigh Ortiz, and one from Lena Pfeiffer. Mia Dietz had seven saves in goal for the Sailors. On the opposing side, Brooke Pizzarello delivered a standout performance for Lakeland/Panas with eight goals and an assist.
The game also marked a major milestone for senior Kayla McCarthy, whose three goals helped her surpass 200 career points. When reached by the Herald, head coach Robert Porter praised McCarthy’s performance. “McCarthy remains a driving force in our offense, and her connection with Paige Montgomery continues to be a deadly 1-2 punch. It’s only fitting that her 200th career point came off a perfect feed to Paige from behind the GLE — a textbook finish that highlights their incredible chemistry.”
In November, McCarthy, a varsity player since eighth grade, signed a National Letter of Intent to play lacrosse at Division 1 Long Island University.
Now sitting at 2-5 for the season, the Sailors will take on Putnam Valley on Friday, April 25, at Putnam Valley High School at 4:30 p.m, followed by an away game against Yorktown on Saturday, April 26, at 3 p.m. Hen Hud will return home on Thursday, May 1, to face John Jay Cross River at 4:30 p.m.
Flag Football
Hen Hud returned to winning form on Monday, April 21, picking up a 27-20 victory over Byram Hills. Hen Hud’s Lucy Mager and Kaitlyn Raguso led the way with standout performances. Mager completed 18 out of 27 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns. She also contributed with 60 rushing yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions – one of which was returned for a touchdown. Raguso led the team on the receiving end with eight catches for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Maria Ribeiro added five receptions for 40 yards and a touchdown, while Kate Stratton had two receptions for 35 yards. Elizabeth Calabro pitched in with two receptions for six yards, both on successful extra point attempts, and recorded an interception.
The Sailors strolled to victory again on Wednesday, April 23, beating Westlake 30-15. Mager completed five out of seven passes for 68 yards, three touchdowns, and two extra point conversions. Stratton had three receptions and three touchdowns. She also snagged an interception, which was returned for a touchdown. Calabro and Ribeiro each contributed with receptions for extra points, while Rodraya Pope led the team in rushing yards with 36.
“The play of the game was made by Arianna Byers when she ran down a girl on an interception who was 30 yards ahead of her. That play shows the effort and desire that our team is playing with,” said head coach Craig Solomon to the Herald.
Up next, Hen Hud (6-3) will host Walter Panas on Monday, April 28, at 4:00 p.m. and Woodlands on Tuesday, April 29, at 6:30 p.m.
Softball

On April 19, Hen Hud traveled to Yorktown for their seventh game of the season. Riding a strong 6-0 record, the Sailors met their match against a tough Yorktown squad. In a tightly contested game, Hen Hud was narrowly defeated, 2-1, as Yorktown handed the Sailors their first loss of the season.
In this game, Hen Hud’s Jasmynne Kessler was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Emma Barbelet pitched six innings, recording five strikeouts. Kiely Morley, Angelina Carbone, McKenna Silverman, and Barbelet each hit a single for the Sailors.
Despite the setback, New York State Sportswriters Association ranked Hen Hud No. 4 in Class A in their 2025 Softball rankings (through April 20).
Hen Hud bounced back on Monday, April 21, with a 8-0 shutout victory over Lakeland at home. Hen Hud’s Barbelet put in a strong performance, tossing a no hitter over seven innings with nine strikeouts and no walks. She also went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Also contributing to the victory was Carbone who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Morley who went 1-for-3 with an RBI and stole three bases.
However, celebrations were short lived as the Sailors finished the week with a 5-4 loss to Harrison in nine innings on Wednesday, April 23. Hen Hud pitcher Barbelet allowed eight hits and five runs, three of them earned. Janae Walker went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Barbelet contributed with an RBI. Morley and Carbone each had hits.
Hen Hud (7-2) will hit the road on Monday, April 28, to face Somers at Primrose Elementary School at 4:30 p.m., followed by a home game against Ardsley on Tuesday, April 29 at 4:30 p.m. The girls will also play Carmel at home on Thursday, May 1 at 4:30 p.m.
Baseball
After losing seven straight games, Hen Hud’s varsity baseball team suffered another tough loss on April 19, falling 12-0 to Rye in six innings. Rye’s Jack Sheridan tossed the entire game, striking out seven, allowing just two hits, and had a total of 65 pitches. Rye’s Nolan Hutson was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and three RBI.
The Sailors broke their winless streak on Tuesday, April 22, beating Pleasantville, 4-1 on the road. Hen Hud’s Jake Hentze pitched a complete game, while Jack Hiltsley, Aiden Lawless, and Connor Leach, all contributed with big hits.
The following day (April 23), Hen Hud fell to Ardsley, 7-4.
Now at 1-9 for the season, the Sailors will hope to rebound for their busy upcoming schedule. On Friday, April 25, the Sailors face Croton at Croton-Harmon High School at 4:30 p.m., followed by a home game against Mahopac on Saturday, April 26 at 12 p.m. The boys will cross paths with Croton again on Monday, April 28, at home at 4:30 p.m., followed by home games against Irvington on Tuesday, April 29 at 5 p.m. and Ardsley on Wednesday, April 30 at 4:30 p.m.
Boys Tennis

Hen Hud’s varsity boys tennis team picked up three big wins before suffering their first defeat of the season this week.
On Monday, April 21, Hen Hud defeated Brewster 5-2, through a clutch effort from Anderson Rench at third singles.
The Sailors competed again the following day (April 22), sweeping a home doubleheader against Somers, 6-1 and 7-0. Head coach Bradley Fredman praised strong showings from Ezra Smith, Anderson Rench, Ben Kushnir, Jericho Shea, and Musa Abdallah at singles, and Adrian Szostak/Jacob Markovitch, Max Parker/Spencer Thomas, and Miles Einchenholtz/Daniel Goldman at doubles.
However, on Thursday, April 24, the team was handed their first loss of the season by Yorktown, falling 6-1.
Hen Hud currently holds a record of 8-1. The Sailors will hit the road on Wednesday, April 30, to face Lakeland at 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. in a double header.
Spring Track
On Tuesday, April 22, Hen Hud competed in a tri-meet against Ardsley and Edgemont at Ardsley High School.
For the boys, Olivier Birotte claimed first place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17:32. Victor Delgado had a double win, in the 800-meter (2:08.99) and 1,600-meter (4:35.99). Perry Quaye won the high jump at 5’10, and Matthew Sullivan earned victory in the triple jump with a jump of 35’10.5”.
For the girls, Sophia Savatgy dominated the sprints, winning both the 100-meter (12.59) and 200-meter dashes (25.92). According to head coach Marcia Bailey, both times were personal records for Savatgy, with her 100-meter time breaking the school record set by Lindsay Tellez last year. (Tellez now competes at the collegiate division three level with SUNY Geneseo.) Abigail Mazzoni won the 400-meter in 1:07.58, Harleigh Corcoran won the discus throw at 88’7”, and Elizabeth Apienti won the shot put with a throw of 27’4.5”.
This weekend (April 25-26), Delgado and Chloe Howard will represent Hen Hud at the prestigious Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Delgado will race in the 3,000-meter run, while Howard is set to compete in the 5,000-meter walk.
Meanwhile, Hen Hud’s girls will participate in the Croton Girls Relays at Yorktown High School, and the boys will head to the Mamaroneck Relays at Mamaroneck High School on Saturday, April 26. In addition, the Sailors will host a league meet against Peekskill, Ardsley, and Sleepy Hollow on Wednesday, April 30.
Golf
After nearly two weeks off, Hen Hud’s golf team returned to action on Wednesday, April 23, in a match against Ardsley. Unfortunately, the Sailors were short two players due to illness and were unable to post a team score. Hen Hud’s Ryder Boston shot a 56 for the team’s lowest individual score.
The Sailors didn’t fare any better on Thursday, April 24, losing to Haldane, 284-262. Andy McNamee turned in Hen Hud’s best performance of the day, shooting a 51.
For their next games, Hen Hud will play Putnam Valley on Monday, April 28, at Putnam County Golf Course at 4 p.m., followed by Sleepy Hollow on Tuesday, April 29, at Hollow Brook Golf Club at 4 p.m. The boys will also play Newburgh Free Academy on Thursday, May 1, at Hollow Brook Golf Club at 4 p.m.
Winter Honors – Girls Basketball
Lohud recently announced its Westchester/Putnam girls basketball all-stars for the 2024-25 season. Hen Hud senior Kaitlyn Raguso earned first team honors, while junior Elyse Smith was selected as an honorable mention.
College Corner

Women’s Lacrosse – Division 1: Iona University’s Kira Varada (Hen Hud Class of 2021) scored three goals in a 12-7 loss to Mount St. Mary’s University on April 16, which helped her surpass 200 career points. She becomes just the third woman in program history to achieve 200 or more career points.
On Thursday, April 24, Varada was named to the 2025 All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC)First Team and earned MAAC Midfield of the Year for the third consecutive season. She was also selected to the MAAC All-Academic Team, which recognizes student-athletes maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher.
Women’s Lacrosse – Division I: The St. Bonaventure women’s lacrosse team lost 20-14 to the University of Massachusetts Amherst in its final home game of the year on April 19. In this game, Fiona McGovern (Hen Hud Class of 2021) had three goals and three assists.
Women’s Lacrosse – Division 1: On Sunday, April 20, Maddie Porter (Hen Hud Class of 2023) tallied nine saves and three ground balls for Eastern Michigan University (EMU) in their 16-12 win over the University of Akron. Porter’s performances helped her reach 64 ground balls, breaking her own school record of 63 set last year. She also became the first EMU goalkeeper to make over 150 stops in a single season.
Women’s Lacrosse – Division II: University of Mount Olive’s Caroline Clark (Hen Hud Class of 2023) was selected to the All-Conference Carolinas Second-Team. The sophomore had a strong season, totaling 32 points behind 27 goals and five assists. She ranked second on the team with 38 ground balls while recording 25 caused turnovers and 17 draw controls.
Women’s Lacrosse – Division II: Jordan Porter (Hen Hud Class of 2022) scored two goals for Missouri Western State women’s lacrosse team in their 17-8 victory over McKendree University on April 19.
Women’s Lacrosse – Division III: This week, Meredith College’s Katherine Couch (Hen Hud Class of 2023) was one of three picked for the USA South Women’s Lacrosse All-Conference Third Team. Couch finished the season with 20 ground balls, 20 caused turnovers, and 12 draw controls.
Track & Field – Division 1: Last weekend, Brown University’s track and field programs competed at the MIT Sean Collier Invitational and Georgia Tech Invitational. At the MIT Invitational, Isolde McManus (Hen Hud Class of 2021) finished third in the 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:30.55.
Track & Field – Division III: Gettysburg College finished first at the Mason-Dixon Invitational on April 18-19. Olivia Taylor (Hen Hud Class of 2021) finished third in the pole vault with a Centennial Conference – qualifying height of 3.06 meters, which ranks second in the program history and sets a new personal record for Taylor.
