Flag Football

The 2025 flag football season has officially begun. On March 22, local teams, including Peekskill, took part in the season kick-off event hosted by USA Football and the New York Giants at Somers High School. Giants’ offensive tackle Andrew Thomas and safeties Anthony Johnson and Tyler Nubin were present and spoke to the young players at this event.
This season, the Red Devils will play in Class B, alongside Lakeland, Walter Panas, Poughkeepsie, Brewster, John Jay Cross River, Somers, Mahopac, Yorktown, Horace Greeley, Eastchester, Tappan Zee, and Fox Lane. The Peekskill girls are led by head coach Tyrone Searight and assistant coach Anthony Turner.
On Thursday, March 27, Peekskill convincingly beat Westlake, 25-6, in their season opener at home. Peekskill’s Jealina Searight had a big game with two interceptions (one of which led to a touchdown) and one rushing touchdown. In addition, Mirian Bonilla had one interception and one touchdown and Jayla Smith scored one touchdown.
The Red Devils played again the following day, March 28, against Horace Greeley. Unfortunately, the Peekskill girls were unable to replicate their magic from the night before and lost, 13-6.
Peekskill currently holds a record of one win and one loss. The Red Devils return to action on Tuesday, April 1, against Brewster at Brewster High School at 5 p.m. They will also play Fox Lane on Thursday, April 3, at home at 4:30 p.m., and Woodlands on Monday, April 7, at home at 5 p.m.
Spring Track

Peekskill senior Jermaine Carter has been riding high for the last few weeks. On March 21-23, competing for Westchester Striders, Carter took part in the USATF (USA Track & Field) National Youth Indoor Championships. He placed fifth in the 1,500-meter race in 4:20.34, earning All-American honors. (Individuals that place in the top eight in events or relays at the USATF National Championships earn the title of “All-American”)
“This recognition is not just an honor, it’s a powerful validation of all the hard work and relentless effort I’ve poured into my sport. It’s a thrilling achievement that makes every early morning practice and every tough competition worth it,” Carter told the Peekskill Herald.
Just a week later, Carter officially committed to the University at Buffalo. He hopes to continue his track career at the Division 1 level, alongside his older sister, Brianna Carter (Peekskill High School Class of 2023).
When asked what it would mean to compete with his sister, Carter said, “My incredible teammates and coaches have been instrumental in my journey, but no one has influenced me more than my amazing sister. She has been my unwavering support through every twist and turn, always leading by example as the eldest. The idea of having the chance to run alongside her again fills me with enthusiasm. This is just one of the many reasons I’m pouring my heart and soul into making the team.”
Things only got better for Carter on Friday, March 28, when Peekskill competed in the 2025 Tusker Twilight Invitational at Somers High School. Kicking off his final season as a Red Devil, Carter finished first in the 800-meter run in 2:06.17. He also placed ninth out of 40 athletes in the 1,600-meter run at 4:52.64.
Despite his victory in the 800-meter race, Carter hopes to improve as the season progresses. “As a senior, my goal before graduation is to smash the 800-meter race and clock in at 1:59 or faster.”
Capping off an already impressive few weeks, Peekskill High School recently named Carter its latest “Athlete of the Month.”
Other results from the Tusker Twilight Invitational include: Greg Tompkins – fourth in the Novice Boys 400 meter dash (1:01.78).
For the girls, Amanda Nelson claimed first place in the Novice 100-meter dash at 14.77, Arisa Specce placed second in the 1,500-meter race walk at 8:38.01, and Imani Felder placed fifth in the high jump at 4-6.
Up next for Peekskill is a dual meet against Hendrick Hudson on Tuesday, April 1, at home at 4:30 p.m. The team will also compete at a meet on Saturday, April 5, at Anne M. Dorner Middle School in Ossining.
Softball

Peekskill’s varsity softball team fell short in their season opener to Blind Brook, 24-5, on March 28. The Peekskill girls were overwhelmed by strong performances from Blind Brook’s Bella Montesano, who went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in (RBIs), and Charlotte Florin, who went 4-for-4 and had two triples.
Peekskill will need to up their game this week as they have three games in three days. Their schedule includes: an away game against The Leffell School on April 2, an away game against Ramapo High School on April 3, and a home game against Roosevelt on April 4. The Red Devils will also play Mount Vernon on Monday, April 7, at home.
