On Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 3-5 p.m., HVMOCA [Hudson Valley Museum of Contemporary Art] will hold its 5th Annual Juried Exhibition, featuring works by 68 artists, ages 62-94, culled from an national open call on CAFE entitled: “So You Think I Am Too Old Too… A National Juried Exhibition. A look at how older artists and older citizens excel as the years progress.”
Located at 1701 Main Street in Peekskill, HVMOCA has in the past debuted more than 100 young artists whose careers gained renown. Through the years, the museum has taken pride in also championing the work of artists who blossomed at a more advanced age.
In its 5th Annual Juried Exhibition, HVMOCA will feature works by 68 artists, ages 62-94. There is a belief that artists can find their best creative energy during their senior years. Is it the freedom offered by a lifetime of observation or the freedom that age offers to be introspective, to not bow to external critique and judgment?
Louise Bourgeois created her best works, her spiders and cells, well into her 80s. Georgia O’Keefe, dubbed the Mother of American Modernism, and best known for her abstract floral paintings and desert landscapes, looked to the beauty of a blossom and a desert for inspiration.
Think about Joan Jonas, still going strong at 88 with her pioneering performance and video works, or Aaron Birnbaum, a tailor turned self-taught painter and folk artist who at the age of 102 had his first museum exhibition at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Consider Roz Schneider, who at age 91 gave her last lecture and presentation, three months before her passing, right here in Peekskill in 2023 at Hudson Valley MOCA ‘s “Address Earth 2023” opening, as featured in the Peekskill Herald where she spoke about her nature based films and paintings.
Hudson Valley MOCA is open every Thursday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “So You Think I Am Too Old To… A National Juried Exhibition” will be on display Sunday, February 2, 2025 to Saturday, May 3, 2025.
