Boys’ Basketball
Coming off a win against Hendrick Hudson, Peekskill’s Varsity Boys Basketball team continued their good form with a victory over Edgemont on Wednesday, Jan 22. The final score of that game was, Peekskill 67-53 Edgemont. Peekskill’s Jaden Chavis shone in this game, dropping a total of 30 points. In addition, Darius Smythe and Isaiah Crawford both scored 9.
Later in the week, on Jan. 24, Peekskill overcame Sleepy Hollow, 63-26, at home. In that contest, Chavis scored 23 for the Red Devils and Isaiah Crawford scored 17.
On Saturday, Jan. 25, spectators at the Coaches vs Cancer Showcase at Mahopac High School, were treated to a rematch of last year’s Section 1 Class AA championship final, with Peekskill taking on Suffern.
Just like last year’s final, this clash was a close one from beginning to end. After some back and forth action, both teams went into overtime deadlocked at 51-51. Suffern, who are third in Class AAA, made the most out of their chances and were able to edge a victory over Peekskill, 59-58. Peekskill’s Chavis and Crawford led the Red Devils in points, with 28 and 16 respectively.
The Peekskill boys currently hold an overall record of nine wins and six losses. In their next game, Peekskill will get a chance to get revenge against Ardsley, who they lost to earlier in the season, on Thursday, Jan. 30, at home at 4:30 p.m.
This weekend, the district will host a Black History Month Peekskill Basketball Showcase. Several teams, boys and girls, will compete at this showcase but the Peekskill boys will only face Poughkeepsie on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m.
Girls’ Basketball
Peekskill’s Varsity Girls Basketball team extended their winless drought to six games on Wednesday, Jan. 22, losing 44-41 to Edgemont at home. In that contest, Jealina Searight dropped 15 points, followed by Amari Murphy with 11 and Nai’lah Smalls with 8.
The following day, on Jan. 23, Peekskill won its first match in 37 days, defeating Barack Obama School for Social Justice, 52-25. Amari Murphy led the Red Devils in points with 26. Trailing her was Nai’lah Smalls with 11.
The Peekskill girls picked up another victory on Monday, Jan. 27, against Roosevelt, 54-32, at home. In that game, Jealina Searight had 18 points and Jayla Smith had 14.
The Red Devils currently hold a record of five wins and nine losses. Their next match is against Ardsley on Thursday, Jan. 30, at Ardsley High School at 4:30 p.m. Peekskill will also face Sleepy Hollow on Friday, Jan. 31, at home at 6:30 p.m, part of the district’s Black History Month Peekskill Basketball Showcase. Senior night celebrations will be held prior to this match. Finally, the Peekskill girls will oppose Port Chester on Monday, Feb. 3, at home at 4:30 p.m.
Wrestling
On Thursday, Jan. 23, the Red Devils were beaten by Lakeland-Panas, 68-5. Tony Monchinski was the only wrestler to pick up points for the Red Devils, via technician fall (18-3; 4:54) at 145 lbs.
Prior to this dual, senior wrestlers on the Peekskill Varsity Wrestling team were recognized during their senior night celebrations.
Over the weekend, Peekskill competed in the Bulldog Tournament at Beacon High School. According to Coach Andre Lee, Peekskill finished 15th out of 15 teams, with no wrestlers placing in weight class finals.
Up next for the Red Devils is a league dual against Somers on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at Somers High School at 5 p.m. Peekskill will also compete in the Peter Caruso Wrestling Tournament at Mahopac High School on Saturday, Feb. 1.
Boys’ Swimming
The Peekskill-Hen Hud-Haldane Varsity Swim team came up short against Ossining, 90-77, on Friday, Jan. 24. According to Peekskill head coach Alana Donabie, Zachary Ninan placed second overall in highest points and Thomas Loctizer placed fifth overall.
Peekskill’s merged team finished their regular season with a conference record of five wins and three losses. On Saturday, Feb. 1, Peekskill’s merged team will compete in the Section 1 Conference 3 Championships at Mount Vernon High School at 9 a.m. Following this meet, a few swimmers are expected to continue on to sectionals swimming next week at Felix Festa Middle School.
Winter Track
Senior Arisa Specce represented Peekskill at the Section 1 Westchester County Championships on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Armory Track. The track star, who has impressed several times this season, finished third in the 1,500 meter race walk, with a time of 8:37.28. Ahead of her were Scarsdale’s Julie Scheffler in second and Hendrick Hudson’s Chloe Howard in first.
Jermaine Carter was the only male to qualify from Peekskill, but unfortunately was unable to finish his race, according to head coach Oscar Moscoso.
Athletes on the Peekskill track team will have close to three weeks to practice before the Class B Championships on Feb. 16 at the Armory Track. Coach Miranda Mattiace says teams will find out which athletes qualified for the event the week prior.
Bowling
The 2024-25 bowling season has come to an end for the Peekskill Varsity Bowling team.
On Wednesday, Jan. 22, Peekskill fell to Yorktown, with both the boys and girls losing, 7-0.
The following day, in positional round matches, the Peekskill boys fell to John Jay, 7-0, and the Peekskill girls overcame Horace Greeley, 7-0. For the girls, Kimberly Alfaro scored a total of 414 points.
