On Saturday, October 19, from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m., families will get the chance to learn about wildlife rehabilitation as part of The Great Give Back at the Desmond Fish Library in Garrison. Just 13 minutes north, and 7.5 miles, the Desmond Fish Library will host a program about wildlife rehabilitation.
What do you do if you encounter an injured or or potentially orphaned wild animal? Find out at the Desmond Fish Library where a licensed New York State wildlife rehabilitator Maggie Ciarcia-Belloni will teach folks just what to do if they encounter an injured or or potentially orphaned wild animal and about Wildlife Rehabilitation.
Maggie has been a rehabilitator for 27 years, specializing in small mammals, game birds, and especially opossums. You will discover what to do if you find wildlife, how to potentially become a wildlife rehabilitator yourself, and meet an opossum, North America’s only marsupial.
Though they may look menacing and frighten people because of their rat-like appearance, opossums are extremely beneficial for the environment and in our suburban landscape. Opossums help control pests, clean up the environment, and eat around 5,000 ticks per year slowing the insects spread of Lyme disease. These amazing marsupials also eat a variety of pests, including mice, rats, cockroaches, snails, slugs, and lots of other insects.
Give Back is a day of opportunities for the patrons of the Public Libraries of New York State to participate in meaningful, service-oriented experiences. This year the Desmond Fish Library is giving back to nature, particularly our local wildlife with this program. To support the work of our local wildlife rehabilitators, the Desmond Fish Library will be collecting in-kind donations all month long.
