Community Tennis Day
The Peekskill Community Tennis Association, a newly formed local group, is hosting a free Community Tennis Day on Saturday July 20th from 10am – noon at the Depew Park tennis courts. Attendees from beginners to experts and everyone in between are invited to show up and join by bringing a racket, lots of water, and maybe even a chair to sit and relax when not on the court. Attendees will be able to practice tennis skills with a local tennis pro or take part in a friendly doubles round-robin. If you don’t know how to play, but have always been curious, show up and let the Peekskill Community Tennis Association teach about the ins and outs of the sport. If you don’t have a racket, no problem. The USTA has a few rackets that participants can borrow at the event. So even if you do not have one, you can join in the fun.
Over the past few months, over a dozen local residents came together to form a local Tennis Association. The goal of the group, led by Alex Smith, will be to connect local tennis players, help expand access to the sport to more people in the City, advocate for better court conditions, and eventually help revive a Peekskill High School Tennis team. A future goal is to include the Pickleball crowd who will be playing in the new Pickleball courts that were made possible with a $1 million dollar grant for upgrades to Depew Park with the support of former NYS Assemblywoman Sandy Galef.
The group is currently working with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to officially form a nonprofit organization under the USTA umbrella. The initial board will be led by Alex Smith, Margaret DeFonce, and Conor Greene. In addition, another dozen residents are helping in the background as part of the effort. For more information, how to join the effort or just to learn about Tennis, contact the PCTA at [email protected] or follow them on Facebook.
Arts 10566 Community Mural
Arts10566 is holding a community mural painting for all ages from 8:00 am to Noon at the Taco Dive Bar. The community will come together at the Taco Dive Bar where Arts 10566 teacher, local artist and muralist Brandon Cruz will lead kids, families, teens and adults in an art event where they will be spray painting stenciled candy skulls and calaveras. Calaveras are one of the most recognizable symbols of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a festive day that celebrates the deceased.
Brandon Cruz working with Arts 10566 has created multiple murals we have come to know in Peekskill. This includes the “Peekskill” mural on the Bantam Tools Building on Water Street completed in 2022 and the Barricades surrounding the patio of The Central. In addition, Cruz has created some of the most iconic art murals located throughout the City of Peekskill including most of the works inside and outside of the old Peekskill Brewery including many of their cans. He’s also created murals for Slainte, Iron Health, and outside of the city at JV Hot Bagels.
Join Brandon and Arts 10566 this Saturday to make the Taco Dive Bar, Station Square, and the entrance to the City from the Train Station a fun and fascinating place to be. Wear appropriate clothing that may get paint on it.
