Boards and pushpins. Grouped and arranged in rhythmic patterns, they will cover the walls of Gauchos Steakhouse on North Division Street. Beginning Nov. 5, local artist Will Hanlon will open a new solo exhibition curated by John Mucciolo. The show is part of an ongoing series of art displays that turn the restaurant into a creative space for Hudson Valley artists.

The exhibition, titled Pin Festival, will feature about 15 works made with thousands of metal and plastic pushpins. Each piece builds texture over a panel, forming reflective mosaics that shift with light and distance. The materials are simple, yet the result produces reliefs that seem to move as the viewer changes position. It is as if they were dancing on the walls.
Known in Peekskill for his experimentation with light, pattern, and repetition, Wil Hanlon uses found objects to create rhythm and motion. In this series, metallic pins mirror the ambient lighting, emphasizing the tactile quality of each surface without the need for frames or digital components. Hanlon describes his process as “building order out of what goes unnoticed.” That idea runs through his recent work, marked by minimalism and material reuse.
For years, Hanlon’s art has blurred the line between painting and sculpture. His three-dimensional pushpin pieces have been exhibited at the Field Gallery within Peekskill’s public library, the Hendrick Hudson Free Library in Montrose, and regional spaces such as Tappan Z Art Gallery in Tarrytown, Riverfront Gallery in Yonkers, and the Tompkins Corners Cultural Center in Putnam Valley. The new show at Gauchos continues that trajectory in a community setting.
Curator John Mucciolo, who has organized other recent exhibitions at Gauchos—including one featuring artist Sergio Benenson—coordinates this installation as part of the restaurant’s ongoing effort to open its walls to local artists and connect directly with the community. The works will be available for public viewing at no cost.
The exhibition will be on view from Nov. 5 through Dec. 30, with an opening reception on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. No reservation is required. Pieces may be viewed during regular restaurant hours: Sunday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday until 11 p.m. For more information, call (914) 293-0292 or visit the restaurant’s website.
