A table set for Sabbath peace becomes a stage for chaos. Between prayers and awkward laughter unfolds Bad Shabbos, a film that will arrive in Peekskill on Sunday, Nov. 2. The evening, part of Community Film Night organized by First Hebrew Congregation, presents fundamental themes wrapped in humor and subtle critique.

The screening will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be open to the public at 1821 Main Street. Admission is $5 and includes pizza and drinks. After the film, attendees will be able to join an informal community discussion to share impressions and reflect on the situations portrayed in the story.
Bad Shabbos, directed by Daniel Rosenberg and produced by Kyra Sedgwick, brings together a cast that includes Method Man (Cliff Smith), David Paymer, and Sedgwick herself. The plot follows an interfaith couple (one of the protagonists is Jewish and his partner is Catholic) who organize their first Friday dinner with both families. What begins as a cordial gathering turns into a whirlwind of misunderstandings, tension, and dark humor after an unexpected accident.
The film has received the Audience Award at several Jewish film festivals and stands out for its critical approach to family rituals, appearances, and the dynamics of contemporary faith. Its comic and provocative tone opens space to question the ways in which conflicts around identity and tradition are managed.
The purpose of the event, organized by First Hebrew Congregation, is to promote a cultural gathering that transcends religion. In its recent activities, the synagogue has included film nights, lectures, and celebrations open to the entire community, with the goal of strengthening coexistence and dialogue.
Doors will open at 5 p.m. Organizers recommend that the public arrive early to secure a good seat. They also require confirming attendance before Oct. 30 by writing to [email protected]. For more information, the public may call 914-739-0500 (ext. 101).
