Mariachi trumpets, Caribbean drums, and Andean guitars fill the air. Spanish drifts through the streets, sometimes mingled with a few words in English. The scent of freshly fried empanadas, tamales, and strong coffee lingers in the evening breeze. These are the sounds, flavors, and aromas of Hispanic culture that have filled Peekskill throughout October. On Oct. 17, at the City of Peekskill Youth Bureau will host “Elegance in Heritage,” an evening dedicated to Hispanic identity and traditions. The Youth Bureau is located at 828 Main Street.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. and feature cultural performances, local talent, and traditional food. The program’s goal is to bring the community together to celebrate, recognize, and honor the contributions, history, and culture of Hispanic peoples in the United States.

This year’s celebration unfolds in a different context. According to community organizers and local officials, two traditional festivals—the Ecuadorian Festival and the Hispanic Heritage Festival—were canceled in 2025 following immigration enforcement operations in the area that created fear and uncertainty among Hispanic families.
In this more intimate setting, Peekskill residents are eager to gather for the gala. The effort to keep Hispanic culture visible also took shape through the public call to nominate outstanding members of the Hispanic community, resulting in six honorees recognized for their contributions to the city in areas such as education, community service, and culture.
The festivities, which each year extend from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, aim to strengthen ties between the city and its Hispanic residents—not only to build connections but also to ensure that immigrants feel an integral part of Peekskill. Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations have also become part of civic and school agendas across the city.
For the Oct. 17 gathering, in addition to culinary delights, Hispanic fashion, and community awards, there will be a special performance by DJ Esco. For more information about the program, contact Tuesday Paige McDonald at (914) 734-4149 or via email at [email protected].
