A whistle will pierce the silence as rows of blue uniforms wait neatly laid out on the floor. That battlefield scene will be brought to life on Saturday, September 13, at the Lincoln Depot Museum, recreating moments that shaped the Civil War more than 160 years ago. The immersive program, titled Life of a Union Soldier, will transport visitors back to the 19th century, offering a firsthand look at military routines in the field: drill, marching, camp setup, and live firing demonstrations.

The event will begin at 11 a.m. Uniformed reenactors will guide participants through four hours of hands-on activities designed to bring history to life. The schedule includes enlistment at a recruiting station, receiving uniforms, learning formation drills, and setting up camp. Guests will play historic games, share lunch around the fire, receive basic military instruction, and witness a live musket demonstration. The program will conclude with a symbolic discharge, marking the return to civilian life.
Life of a Union Soldier is part of the museum’s weekend programming, which runs through November 23. Similar events have drawn strong interest from the community. In 2024, the program offered participants an equally immersive experience, combining historical interpretation with family-friendly engagement.
Since 2015, Lincoln Depot Museum has maintained a year-round calendar blending permanent exhibitions with special events. Highlights include seasonal openings featuring living history, February ceremonies commemorating Abraham Lincoln’s historic visit to Peekskill, and guest lectures by historians. These initiatives complement the museum’s permanent exhibit, which explores Lincoln’s legacy and Peekskill’s role in the Civil War.
Advance registration is required for Saturday’s event, as space is limited. Registration is available via email at [email protected]. Admission for this special program is $5 for children, $10 for adults, and $20 per family. These fees apply exclusively to this event and are not part of the museum’s standard admission. Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and footwear. For additional information about Life of a Union Soldier and upcoming programs, visit the museum’s website or call (914) 402-4318.
