On Wednesday, August 6, Peekskill Central Firehouse — located at 1141 Main Street — will open its doors for a community gathering that blends history and purpose. Wings of Legacy is a call to honor the Tuskegee Airmen, the legendary group of African American aviators from World War II.
The program, scheduled from 6 p.m to 8 p.m., includes a free screening of a tribute film dedicated to the pioneering pilots. The event aims to recall their legacy and acknowledge their impact on U.S. military aviation. The screening will be accompanied by a brief talk on local history related to the Tuskegee Airmen.
Adjacent to the film presentation is the opening of AVWAR Realty, organizer of the event. The company, founded by Colin D. Smith, draws inspiration from the legacy of his grandfather, Archie Smith, who during World War II trained approximately 200 of the Tuskegee Airmen, placing him as a key figure in the history of racial integration in U.S. aviation. Additional tributes will honor other Tuskegee Airmen members, some of whom were connected to Westchester County Airport.

Refreshments will be offered during the evening. The event is open to the general public, though attendees are advised to confirm their participation through the online registration page. Organizers anticipate a significant turnout, especially from history enthusiasts, and recommend arriving early to secure seating.
The gathering will also foster conversation about historical heritage and collective memory. It is expected to bring together residents, local leaders, and individuals interested in preserving and promoting the history of those who, more than eight decades ago, broke barriers in U.S. military aviation.
