On Sunday, June 15, Cliffdale Farm — located in Croton-On-Hudson, about 10 miles from downtown Peekskill — will become an exploration ground for nature enthusiasts. For one hour, attendees will take pencil, paper, magnifying glass, and binoculars to participate in “Powerful Pollinators,” a field activity designed to closely observe insects and learn more about their role in the reproduction of thousands of plant species. The initiative, created by Teatown Lake Reservation, is intended for people of all ages. It will take place starting at 1 p.m. and requires prior registration. “Powerful Pollinators” will be open to no more than six families, each consisting of up to five members. The educational center’s goal is to promote hands-on learning in small groups.
The program includes the construction of handmade nets to capture insects without harming them, team-based identification activities, and reflection on their function within agricultural and wild ecosystems. The event will also feature interactive games and educational materials focused on the concept of ecological interdependence.

Teatown maintains a strong commitment to the community through environmental conservation outreach. In October 2024, the site hosted a similar event titled “Insect Sweeping at Cliffdale Farm.” During that program, participants explored tall grasses in search of butterflies, beetles, and grasshoppers. Additionally, the reserve served as a regional meeting site for the North American Butterfly Association, focusing on the monitoring of butterflies and pollinating insects. Both events were well received.
This time, expectations remain high. Although favorable weather is anticipated, organizers will provide timely updates in case of any changes due to weather conditions. Attendees are advised to wear comfortable clothing, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. The cost is $10 per family for Teatown members and $15 for non-members.
