Finger snaps and foot stomps will echo through the night on Friday, June 13, during the Open Mic at Bethany Arts Community in Ossining, just about eight miles from downtown Peekskill. This venue, where art meets camaraderie in a warm and welcoming atmosphere, will open its doors at 7 p.m. so participants can sign up for the evening. The lineup is wide-ranging: poetry, music, spoken word, and performance will all have a place.

This initiative, held every second Friday of the month since 2022, is supported by HV Books for Humanity, an organization dedicated to promoting literacy. In addition, it works to uplift the arts in their many forms. During Open Mic nights, the organization handles artist sign-ups from 7-7:30 p.m., although slots are typically filled within the first 25 minutes.
Each session features 15 performers who take the stage to entertain the audience. Each artist is given five minutes to deliver their piece and captivate the crowd. Organizers emphasize that, unlike many similar events, this Open Mic stands out for its professional setup. Microphones, an amplifier, and a mixer are available. Keyboardists must request the instrument by 4 p.m. Friday if they plan to use it.
The event is well organized. Transitions between performers do not exceed 90 seconds, and the rules are non-negotiable. Respecting the time limit is essential. A timekeeper will monitor the clock and signal when the time is up. Interaction with the audience must be respectful. Interruptions are not allowed, and snaps and stomps are the preferred way to celebrate each performer’s work. This tradition, inherited from New York City poetry slams, helps preserve the emotional flow of intimate performances.
Audience interaction is another core requirement. The goal is to foster community connections. The Open Mic has zero tolerance for hate speech or discriminatory content, including racism, sexism, homophobia, and the like. Entry has a suggested donation of $10-$20. Those who perform are exempt from payment.
After the June 13 session, the next Open Mic is scheduled for July 11. For more information about this and other events, contact 914-847-0773 or email [email protected].
