Since the first written history of New York City, women have played a significant role in shaping the cultural landscape of the “New World.”. Although there were roadblocks to their business ownership even up until the Women’s Business Ownership Act of 1988, the metropolis offered centuries of accomplished female entrepreneurs many opportunities.
Industries specializing in the arts and media became an influential force that wove the social and economic fabric of the metro area into a tapestry of shared history, with women’s stories a centerpiece of that narrative.
Few understand the vital role of female trailblazers everywhere better than Cortlandt resident Jane Applegate, co-founder of the Remarkable Women Project Inc., an organization dedicated to“sharing true stories about remarkable women to inspire everyone to live courageously.” The Remarkable Women Project grew out of a global TV series of the same name, for which Applegate was an executive producer. The Project aspires to shine a light on the accomplishments of talented but overlooked women throughout history.
Applegate’s long career in promoting women’s stories–which also includes award-winning independent films, investigative reporting, and five books–has earned her a spot as keynote speaker at the March 28 Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce’s annual Women in Business Celebration, along with Alice Look, Remarkable Women Project co-founder, and also a veteran television production executive. The March 28 event runs from noon-4 p.m. at Crotonville Conference Center in Ossining. The Celebration includes extensive networking, display tables and a discussion panel of prominent, local women in business, as well as a light lunch and cash bar. (See registration link below.)
Applegate’s current project, with Greenlit Productions, is a hybrid documentary TV series called Remarkable Women: Out of the Shadows, which researches untold stories about accomplished and remarkable women specifically from Finland.
In addition to her retrospective focus, Applegate looks to the future of women’s stories, as a professor at the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema at Brooklyn College, teaching the business of film to the next generation of storytellers.
The Remarkable Women Project hosted on March 6 its first-ever global summit, in Dublin, Ireland–a celebration of the past, present and future of empowered women living courageously.
