The Historic Peekskill Elks Lodge # 744 located at 1038 Brown St. is inviting Veterans and First Responders, including police, fire, EMS, nurses, doctors, and others who dedicate their lives to serving our community, to a free, home-cooked brunch on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
The menu of breakfast favorites includes eggs, muffins, bacon, ham, sausage, fruits, and other goodies, as well as coffee, tea, and juice. The Elks make this yearly event a warm and welcoming experience for those who have given so much to our community. When Veterans and First Responders walk in the door, they are greeted with a warm smile, a handshake or even a hug, to show appreciation for their service to our country and their commitment to our community.
“The idea was formulated by Elk member Mary Colleen Sokerka, who wanted to celebrate both Veterans and First Responders with a home-cooked meal,” said Johanne Read, Elks Lodge Community Event Chair. “The brunch has grown into a meaningful way to show appreciation for Veterans and First Responders.”
“The Elks have a longstanding tradition of community service in the City of Peekskill,” Read said. “We also have a longstanding commitment to supporting Veterans through grants and services, from providing meals to assisting those transitioning to civilian life. In addition, the Elks also work with organizations like My Brother Vinny, which serves veterans in need.”
The Peekskill Elks Lodge # 744 and its members not only “talk the talk” about being a community organization, but “walk the walk.” Earlier this month, the Peekskill Elks hosted a free winter soup kitchen where a variety of soups were enjoyed by many in the community. In November, they hosted the Peekskill Repair Cafe, which returned after many years of being on hiatus. For the past four years, they have hosted a free and safe Halloween Trick-or-Treat night, providing free candy, snacks, and other goodies for kids 12 and under to enjoy.
The Elks have also hosted a free Elks Bike Day during the summer, in collaboration with Karmic Cycles, where they repaired bikes for free and raffled off more than 20 refurbished bicycles. In addition to many other events, the Elks Lodge also hosts the MendByMe free pop-up shop four times a year. The next pop-up shop is Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1.
