On February 15, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., visit the Trailside Museums and Zoo at Bear Mountain, where Valentine’s Day will continue on Saturday. Join the Trailside Museums staff and help make Valentines for the animals by putting together special treats that you can then watch them eat. There will also be fun activities, presentations, and crafts for children of all ages.
Watch Pal and Sadie, the resident black bears at the Trailside Museums and Zoo, and the other animals, enjoy their gifts. After spreading some love for the animals, head over to the ice skating rink and take a few laps around the Bear Mountain ice skating rink or take a spin on the merry-go-round.
Valentine’s Day at the Zoo is a free event. Parking is $10 per car. The zoo has a suggested entrance fee of $1 per person. However, you can always give more. There is a cash donation box at the entrance of the zoo. Visit the ice skating rink website and contact Guest Services at the Bear Mountain Inn for fees and hours of operation of the Merry-Go-Round 845-786-2731. The walk from the parking lot to the bear den is approximately 20 minutes.
A Mariners Guiding Light: the Fresnel Lens
On Sunday, February 16, from 1 – 2 p.m., head down to Croton Point Park and visit the Croton Point Nature Center to learn about Mariner’s Guiding Light: The Fresnel Lens, hosted by the Westchester County Parks. What is a Fresnel Lens? In the early 1800’s French physicist Augustin-Jen Fresnel invented a powerful type of lens which, when mounted atop a lighthouse could reach far out to sea. This was a remarkable increase in safety for ships and boats. Learn about this invention and how its impact continues today. The Croton Point Nature Center is located at 1 Croton Point Avenue.

On June 10, 2015, the lighthouse was re-lighted in a civic ceremony after being re-fitted with a new replica Fresnel lens
