If you have been down to the Riverfront, or anywhere along the Hudson River recently, you will have noticed the frozen ice sheets. Look far enough, and every once in a while you may notice Bald Eagles sitting atop the sheets of ice. Typically, when you see one Bald Eagle, a few others are close by. That’s because during the winter, when food is more scarce, the Bald Eagle gives up their mainly solitary lifestyle for a more communal one. This also makes it very easy to view Bald Eagles from along the shorelines. The return of the Bald Eagle to the Hudson River is also why, for more than 20 years, Teatown has celebrated the birds’ return with its EagleFest.
This Saturday, February 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Teatown celebrates the 21st annual EagleFest at Croton Point Park. The family-friendly event will have new presenters, activities, and bird walk leaders. In addition, there will be live bird shows, an author talk with Tina Morris, displays by local environmental collaborating organizations, food trucks and more.
EagleFest is an all-day festival celebrating America’s most famous bird. Attendees can join a bird walk, view eagles through spotting scopes, and learn about adventure technology. Children can enjoy making crafts or playing interactive games. Visitors can step inside the Eagle Theatre or Eaglet Stage heated tents to enjoy educational displays and exhibits or view one of the many live shows.
The jam-packed schedule of events can be found here. Inside the Eagle Theater and Eaglet Stage tents, every 45 minutes a new show will be presented. The Eagle Theater will feature live bird shows, such as Brian Robinson presenting Birds of Prey, Christine Peyreigne and Christine’s Critters, and master falconer Brian Bradley with his hawks, falcons, and owls, featuring live flight demonstrations. The Eaglet Stage will feature shows such as Anne Swaim’s Raptors for Rookies, Return to the Sky: The Reintroduction of the Bald Eagle to the Northeast by author Tina Morris, and Birding Basics for Families by Emily Edmonds-Langham.
EagleFest tickets can be purchased at the door for $40 per adult and $23 for children ages 3-12. Visit the Teatown EagleFest website for more information. The snow date for EagleFest is Sunday, February 2.
For those who want to view eagles via a telescope or binoculars, there will be an eagle spotting location set up all day from 9 am to 4 pm at Steamboat Dock River Park in Verplanck for free viewing with no tickets required.
EagleFest 2025 is brought to Croton Point Park by sponsors and collaborators from all over the Hudson Valley and beyond. Some of the sponsors for EagleFest include Con Edison, Win Waste Innovations, Saw Mill River Audubon, Maurice D. Hinchey Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, Club Fit, the Town of Cortlandt, and many others.
