History was made, seasons ended, hearts were broken. This past week was an emotional one for several Peekskill High School varsity teams. This is the final sports roundup for the fall season.
Volleyball
The Varsity Girls Volleyball season ended on Friday, Nov. 1, when Clarkstown South High School beat Peekskill 3-0 in the first round of sectionals. The final scores of each set were (Clarkstown-Peekskill): 25-15, 25-10, 25-11.
Friday’s game featured three kills and five digs from PHS junior Audrina Mendez, two kills and five digs from senior Jealina Searight, one ace and five digs from freshman Camila Torres, and one ace and three kills from senior Adrienne Copeland.
“Our team did some growing this year, playing a much tougher schedule than they had in the past, and learning how to handle the adversity that comes with stronger competition. When battling stronger opponents, our team kept together, provided a united front, and carried each other through the ups and downs. However, there were times when our focus could have been better. We learned tough lessons when we didn’t get the outcomes we wanted,” said Coach Dennis Adams in a statement to the Herald.
“I wish nothing but the best for our players this academic year, and hope our seniors achieve their year-end goals and next challenges after graduation. I’m also looking forward to next season, as our future looks bright!”
The Peekskill girls finished the regular season with a record of five wins and 12 losses. Returning players will need to improve their game if they wish to make it to advanced rounds of sectionals next year.
Football
Tappan Zee tore apart Peekskill in their Hudson Valley Football Tournament semifinal clash on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Just like in their first encounter earlier in the season, Tappan Zee were unstoppable; Peekskill did not get a single point. The final score of the match was Tappan Zee 36-0 Peekskill. Tappan Zee will play Horace Greeley in the championship final this weekend.
The boys finished the regular season with a record of three wins and four losses.
Saturday’s loss also ended the Peekskill cheer team’s fall season. The girls attended all of the football team’s games this season.
Boys Soccer
The Peekskill Varsity Boys Soccer team were knocked out of sectionals by Fox Lane on Thursday, Oct. 31. The fierce semifinal clash ended with the scoreline reading, Fox Lane 3-1 Peekskill.
While the loss to Fox Lane may be painful, the boys have a lot to be proud of. The team made history this year, as the first Peekskill Varsity Boys soccer team in over 40 years to reach the semifinals of sectionals. In addition, the team had a stellar campaign, finishing the season with a record of 12 wins, two losses, and two draws.
