Girls Soccer
The Peekskill Varsity Girls Soccer team will not be advancing to the quarter-finals of the Section 1 Class AA tournament, after being outshone by Mahopac in the first round of sectionals on Friday, Oct. 25.
In the first half, the Mahopac girls scored two goals against the Red Devils. Determined to drive to a victory, the Mahopac girls never let their foot off the gas in the second half and ended the game in a shutout, winning 8-0 against Peekskill.
Mahopac’s Fiona Kelleher scored three goals against the Red Devils. The Mahopac girls were beaten by Albertus Magnus, 7-0, in the quarter-finals on Monday, Oct. 28.
“Although the season didn’t end in the fashion we would have liked, the girls left it all out on the field. Coach Burke and I are extremely proud of the team and their progress this year. Most of our team will be returning next year and we will look to build on this season’s successes as we move forward,” said Coach Anthony DiCuio in a statement to the Herald.
The Peekskill girls’ 2024 season was mixed. The Red Devils had shutouts against Roosevelt (7-0), Ramapo (6-0) and Gorton (6-0). But the girls also experienced a fair share of lows as well, such as their losses to Brewster (5-0), Ardsley (3-0) and Hendrick Hudson (8-0). The Peekskill girls finished their season with a record of eight wins, six losses, and two draws.
Although this year wasn’t the perfect season for the Peekskill girls, it was a great learning experience for many of the young players on the team.

The Peekskill boys will hope to improve their game before they play Tappan Zee in the semifinals of the Hudson Valley Football Tournament. A date has not yet been confirmed for this clash, according to Coach Demetric Gardner.
The semifinal encounter will be tough for the Red Devils, who fell short to Tappan Zee, 26-0, in their season opener. Peekskill will be motivated to win, given the team is the 2023 champion of the Hudson Valley Football Tournament. Spectators are guaranteed to be in for a treat whenever the Peekskill Red Devils face the Tappan Zee Dutchmen.
