Boys Soccer
For their last game of the regular season, the Peekskill Varsity Boys Soccer team traveled to Sleepy Hollow on Thursday, Oct. 17 to face Sleepy Hollow High School.
Unlike their previous encounter earlier in the season when the team earned a comfortable win, Peekskill was unable to secure a victory this time around.
The game started off in Peekskill’s favor with a goal from senior forward Randy Tapia three minutes into the first half.
The Sleepy Hollow Horsemen did not let this early setback bring them down. In the twenty-fifth minute of the game, they were awarded a penalty. Peekskill goalkeeper Angel Cabrera nearly pulled off a heroic save but the penalty was ultimately well placed into the bottom left corner by Sleepy’s Drew McNally, who tied the game 1-1.
After the equalizer, the game was up for grabs. In the second half, both teams had chances to secure a winner, but neither could deliver the finishing blow. The game finished, Peekskill 1-1 Sleepy Hollow.
The Peekskill boys have finished the regular season with a record of 12 wins, two losses, and two draws. As of Oct. 19, the boys are in second place in Section 1 Class AA, behind Tappan Zee, according to GameDay One. The boys will continue to train this week as they prepare for their first game of the postseason. Their opponent is expected to be announced sometime this week.
Girls soccer
The Peekskill Varsity Girls Soccer team have finished the regular season in style, winning their last three games convincingly.
Their latest victory was a 3-0 win against Saunders on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Saunders High School. Scorers for Peekskill included: Janeyra Maldonaldo, Kimberly Alfaro, and Alejandra Morocho. Alfaro has scored 14 goals for Peekskill this season.
The girls have a record of eight wins, five losses, and two draws. The girls have qualified for the postseason, according to Coach Anthony DiCuio. Their next game and opponent are expected to be announced sometime this week.
Girls Swimming
This past week, the Peekskill Varsity Girls Swim team picked up two impressive victories.
On Wednesday, Oct. 16, the Peekskillgirls beat Mount Vernon High School, 76-59, away from home.
The following day, the Peekskill girls faced Brewster at Peekskill Middle School and won, 90-64. Peekskill seniors Norah Thompson-Shapiro (left) and Jasmine Oliva (right) were recognized during their senior night celebration.
The girls currently hold a record of nine wins and one loss. Their next game is against Yonkers on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Peekskill Middle School at 4:30 p.m. The girls will also be competing in a championship swim meet against other teams in their conference on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 8 a.m. at Mark Twain Pool in Yonkers. This is the last regular swim meet of the season.
Volleyball
The Peekskill Varsity Girls Volleyball team have been unable to catch a break in recent weeks.
This past week, the girls lost two matches, extending their losing streak to four games.
On Wednesday, Oct. 16, the Red Devils faced Hendrick Hudson away from home and lost, 3-0. The final scores of each set were: 25-12, 25-6, 25-16.
On Friday, Oct. 18, the Red Devils were beaten by Edgemont, 3-0, at Peekskill High School. The final scores of each set were: 25-14, 25-16, 25-10. The game featured five kills and two digs from Peekskill senior Adrienne Copeland, three kills and five digs from junior Audrina Mendez, and five kills and seven digs from senior Jealina Searight.
The Peekskill girls were able to end their winless drought on Monday, Oct. 21, picking up a 3-0 victory over Poughkeepsie. The final scores of each set were: 25-20, 25-19, 25-18. Prior to the game, seniors on the volleyball team were recognized during their senior night celebration
The girls currently hold a record of five wins and 10 losses.Their next game is against Yonkers CSEE on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Peekskill High School at 4:45 p.m. The girls also play on Thursday, Oct. 24 against Sleepy Hollow at Sleepy Hollow High School at 6 p.m.
Football
The Peekskill Varsity Football team lost again: on Saturday, Oct. 19, the boys were defeated, 17-8, by Walter Panas at Torpy Field. The Red Devils last victory was against Albertus Magnus on Oct. 5.
During the game, Darius Smythe carried the ball nine times for 110 yards and one touchdown, Jaiden Smart had five tackles, and Jahmer Chavis had two tackles and one interception.
Seniors on the football team and cheer team were recognized at this game.
The boys currently hold a record three wins and three losses. Their next game and final game of the regular season is against Horace Greeley on Friday, Oct. 25 at Horace Greeley High School (Chappaqua) at 6:30 p.m.
Cross Country
On Saturday, Oct. 19, Peekskill’s Jermaine Carter broke a school record for the second time this season in the 5,000 meter race at the Section 1 Coaches Invitational at Woodlands High School.
Earlier in the season, Carter broke the record with a time of 17:44.3 at a league meet. On Saturday, he broke his own record with a time of 16:42.1, according to Coach Catherine McCabe. The previous record was held by Tony Monchinski (2022) at 17:49.8.
“I wanted to take a moment to express how incredibly proud we are of Jermaine’s dedication and hard work this season. He has consistently pushed himself to improve at every meet and has not only excelled in competition but also shows remarkable leadership on our team. He is always willing to lend a hand to his teammates and inspires them with his positive attitude and commitment to the sport.” said McCabe.
Peekskill’s Cross Country team’s next meet is on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Hudson Valley Sportsdome in Milton.
