Girls Swimming
The Peekskill Varsity Girls Swim team gained two more wins this past week. On Monday Sept. 23, the girls beat Port Chester High School, 90-71, at Peekskill Middle School.
Two days later on Sept. 25, the girls faced Woodlands for the second time in two weeks. The Woodland girls again lost to the Peekskill girls, who won the swim meet 88-71.
The girls will have a week to rest before their next game on Wednesday, Oct. 9 against Port Chester at Carver Center Pool at 4:30 p.m.
Football
On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Peekskill Varsity Football team faced off against Port Chester High School for their third game of the regular season. Despite the rain, the Peekskill community arrived to show its support for the Red Devils.
The cheers from the audience and the Peekskill Varsity Cheer team helped the Red Devils overcome Port Chester in a fiercely close game. Peekskill eked out a win, Peekskill 14-12 Port Chester.
The Red Devils now hold a record of two wins and one loss. The team’s next game is against Albertus Magnus (Bardonia) at Albertus Magnus High School on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
The 2024 Homecoming court was recognized at Saturday’s football game.
Boys Soccer
Ardsley High School became only the second team this season to beat the high-flying Peekskill Varsity Boys Soccer team on Monday, Sept. 23.
During the game, the Ardsley Panthers showed defensive prowess, not letting Peekskill’s strong front line get on the scoresheet. The game ended Ardsley 2-0 Peekskill; both goals from Ardsley came in the second half.
On Friday, Sept. 27, the Red Devils played Sleepy Hollow High School at Torpy Field. Spectators were treated to an action-packed first half with goals from both teams. The Red Devils scored in the first 25 seconds with a goal from senior Chris Chunchi, but the celebrations didn’t last long. Sleepy Hollow found an equalizer three minutes later with a goal by Alexander Lozada.
The Red Devils took the lead again in the eleventh minute of the game with a goal by senior Randy Tapia. From there, the Peekskill boys looked set to secure a win, but in the last quarter of the game, the Red Devils gave away a penalty. Peekskill goalkeeper Angel Cabrera was called into action and did not disappoint his teammates, pulling off a heroic save and keeping the Red Devils in the lead.
A minute later, Senior Umaru Conteh calmed any worries the Red Devils had, scoring Peekskill’s third goal of the game. The game finished Peekskill 3-1 Sleepy Hollow.
On Monday, Sept. 30, the Peekskill boys traveled to Yonkers to face Yonkers High School at Tibbetts Brook Park. The Red Devils beat the Yonkers Bulldogs convincingly, 4-0. Scorers for Peekskill include: Umaru Conteh (3), Randy Tapia (1). Conteh has scored 16 goals this season for the Red Devils.
The boys currently hold a record of nine wins and two losses. The Red Devils will hope to get their revenge against Ardsley High School in their next game on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Torpy Field.
Girls Soccer
The Peekskill Varsity Girls Soccer team will hope to get back on track this week, after inconsistent performances in their recent matches.
On Tuesday, Sept. 24, the Peekskill girls fell short against Ardsley in a 3-0 loss at Ardsley High School.
On Thursday, Sept. 26, the Red Devils faced off against Edgemont High School at Torpy Field. Sophomore Valeria Otavalo got the Peekskill girls up and running with a stunning goal from a free kick, 11 minutes into the first half. Otavalo has scored three goals so far this season. In the twenty-ninth minute of the match, Edgemont’s Bella Pacia went on an impressive solo run from the halfway line, skipped past various Peekskill players and scored for the Edgemont girls.
No one scored following Edgemont’s equalizer, and the game finished Peekskill 1-1 Edgemont.
The following day on Friday, Sept. 27, the Peekskill girls played Yonkers High School at Torpy Field. Unlike the two games earlier in the week, the Red Devils were all smiles during this match, as they dismantled Yonkers, 7-1.
Scorers for Peekskill include: Kimberly Alfaro (2), Ashlee Ordonez (2), Jackelin Alfaro, Jozelyn Zhinin and Dayana Sari, each with one goal. Freshman Kim Alfaro has scored nine goals this season for the Peekskill girls.
On Monday, Sept. 30, the Peekskill girls faced Sleepy Hollow High School away from home. The Sleepy Hollow girls were too much for the Red Devils to handle and Peekskill lost, 0-4. Sophomore goalkeeper Victoria Jovel pulled 11 saves during the match.
The girls now hold a record of five wins, four losses, and one draw. Their next game is against Hendrick Hudson on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at Torpy Field at 4 p.m. The girls will also play Putnam Valley on Friday, Oct. 4 at Putnam Valley High School at 10 a.m.
Volleyball
The Peekskill Varsity Girls Volleyball team had a jam-packed schedule last week. On Tuesday, Sept. 24, the Red Devils beat Gorton High School, 3-0, at home in a non-conference match, The final scores of each set were: 25-10, 25-14, 25-16. Senior Adrienne Copeland was named Player of the Match by the Red Devils.
According to Lohud, the game featured six kills from PHS senior Adrienne Copeland, five aces from senior Brynne Barros, five aces, five kills and 13 digs from junior Audrina Mendez, five aces and 24 digs from freshman Camila Torres, and five aces, 14 kills and 23 digs from senior Jealina Searight.
On Thursday, Sept. 26, the Peekskill girls traveled to Ardsley to face Ardsley High School. The Ardsley Panthers proved the superior side, beating Peekskill 3-0. The final scores of each set were: 25-6, 25-14, 25-5. Senior Imani Felder was named Player of the Match by the Red Devils.
The Peekskill Varsity Girls Volleyball team was one of 26 teams that competed at the Clarkstown South volleyball tournament in West Nyack on Saturday, Sept. 28. The teams were divided into six pools; Peekskill was in the same pool as John J. East Fishkill Patriots – B Team, Minisink Valley, Baldwin, and Nanuet. After playing all the teams in its pool, the Peekskill team earned enough points to make it to the bronze playoff bracket, but ultimately did not win a bronze trophy.
Later in the evening, the Peekskill girls traveled from Clarkstown South High School to Felix Festa Middle School to play their quarter-final match in the bronze playoff bracket. The Red Devils were unable to defeat their opponents, River Dell, in a one set match, losing 18-25.
On Monday, Sept. 30, the Red Devils lost against Edgemont, 0-3, at Edgemont High School. The final scores of each set were: 15-25, 14-25, 16-25.
The game featured three kills and 23 digs from PHS junior Audrina Mendez, two aces and 22 digs from freshman Camila Torres, three kills and 20 digs from senior Jealina Searight, and two blocks, three kills and three digs from junior Tatiyanna Gonzalez.
The girls currently hold a record of three wins and five loses. Their next game is on Tuesday, Oct. 1 against Sleepy Hollow at Peekskill High School at 6:30 p.m. The girls will also play Poughkeepsie on Friday, Oct. 4 at Poughkeepsie High School at 4:30 p.m. and Alexander Hamiliton on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Alexander Hamilton High School at 12:30 p.m.
