Girls’ Volleyball
This past week was a week to forget for the Peekskill Varsity Girls Volleyball team. On Wednesday Sept. 18, the Red Devils faced Tappan Zee High School at home. The Red Devils were coming off a recent win against Riverside and the Tappan Zee Dutchmen were hoping to bounce back after their recent loss to Somers.
Tappan Zee proved a tough opposition for the Red Devils. The game ended with the Dutchmen beating the Red Devils, 3-0. The final scores of each set were: 25-18, 25-4, 25-13.
According to Lohud, the game featured eight kills from Tappan Zee’s Natalie Lai, five kills from Kerry Martin, five aces from Kailey Dolan, and five aces from Aara Yoon.
For the Peekskill girls: three kills and three blocks from PHS senior Adrienne Copeland, two kills and 14 digs from junior Audrina Mendez, one ace and 15 digs from freshman Camila Torres, and two kills and 19 digs from senior Jealina Searight.
Two days later, on Friday Sept. 20, the Peekskill girls traveled to Yonkers to face Roosevelt High School. Things looked a little better for the Red Devils who won their first two sets, but after losing their third set, the momentum shifted in favor of the Roosevelt Sharks. The game finished Roosevelt 3-2 Peekskill.
The final scores of each set were: 23-25, 26-28, 25-18, 25-13, 15-11. The game featured 22 digs from Roosevelt’s Alexa Anderson, eight digs and four kills from Georeliz Nunes, eight aces from Erinda Zenelaj, and four aces from Sabrina Soares. For the Peekskill girls: 22 digs and two kills from PHS junior Audrina Mendez, four aces and 24 digs from freshman Camila Torres, and 23 digs and 12 kills from Jealina Searight.
The Peekskill girls now hold a record of two wins and three loses. Their next game is on Tuesday, Sept. 24 against Gorton High School at 5 p.m. at Peekskill High School. The girls will also play Ardsley High School on Thursday, Sept. 26 at Ardsley.
Girls’ Swimming
Nikki Brady’s Peekskill Girls’ Varsity Swim team are looking strong after two back-to-back wins this past week.
On Tuesday Sept. 17, the Red Devils beat Brewster, 88-54, at Peekskill Middle School. Peekskill supporters packed the stands and cheered the Peekskill girls to victory.
On Friday Sept. 20, the Red Devils traveled to White Plains to face Woodlands High School at Theodore D Young Community Center. The swim meet finished, Peekskill 80-75 Woodlands.
The Peekskill Varsity Girls Swim team will face Port Chester in their next game on Monday, Sept. 23 at 4:30 p.m. at Peekskill Middle School. The girls will also get a rematch against Woodlands on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 4:30 p.m. at Peekskill Middle School.
Girls’ Soccer
The Peekskill Girls’ Varsity Soccer team, led by Coach Anthony DiCuio, has become an exciting, attack-minded team this season. The team features a crop of exciting young talent, including PHS freshman Kimberly Alfaro, #7, who currently leads the team in goals this season.
On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Red Devils faced Gorton High School at Torpy Field. Kim Alfaro got the girls up and running with an early goal, three minutes into the first half. Nine minutes later, Alfaro doubled the lead and scored her second of the match. Senior Brianna Zhunio and freshman Dayana Sari also scored in the first half and the Peekskill girls led Gorton, 4-0, at halftime.
Sophomore Valeria Otavalo scored Peekskill’s fifth goal in the second half with a shot from outside the 18-yard box. The last goal of the game came from Alfaro, who scored Peekskill sixth and simultaneously secured herself an impressive hat trick (three goals). The game ended Peekskill 6-0 Gorton.
On Saturday, Sept. 21, at the district’s inaugural Hispanic Heritage/Latin X Showcase, the Peekskill girls soccer team beat Alexander Hamilton High School, 2-0. Both goals were scored by Kim Alfaro. Alfaro has seven goals so far this season for the Peekskill girls. Photos by Chloe Trieff.
Alfaro was named Player of the Match by the Red Devils. Senior Janeyra Maldonado and sophomore Valeria Otavalo received all-showcase recognitions from the Peekskill City School District.
The girls currently hold a record of four wins and 2 loses. Their next game is against Ardsley High School on Tuesday Sept. 24 at 4:30 p.m. at Ardsley High School. The girls will also face Edgemont on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 5 p.m. at Torpy Field and Yonkers on Friday Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. at Torpy Field.
Boys’ Soccer
The Peekskill Varsity Boys Soccer continues to shine with two impressive wins this past week. On Thursday Sept. 19, senior Umaru Conteh showed his ruthlessness in front of goal once again with four goals in Peekskill’s, 7-1 victory over Hendrick Hudson High School. Conteh has 12 goals so far this season for the Red Devils.
Scorers for the Red Devils include: Umaru Conteh (4), Andres Cabrera, Chris Chalco, and Juan Ventura, all with one goal. Helmer Herrera Garica scored a consolation goal from the penalty spot late in the second half for the Hendrick Hudson Sailors.
After this impressive showing, the Red Devils went into their clash against Brewster confident on Saturday Sept. 21. It took Peekskill eight minutes to get on the scoreboard with a goal from Matt Espinoza. The Red Devils kept their cool and secured a 3-0 victory. Chris Chalco and Randy Tapia also scored for the Red Devils.
The boys now hold a record of seven wins and one loss. Their next game is against Ardsley on Monday Sept. 23 at 4:30 p.m. at Ardsley High School. They will also play Sleepy Hollow High School on Friday Sept. 27 at 7:00 p.m. at Torpy Field.
Football
On Friday Sept. 20, the Peekskill Varsity Football team traveled to Poughkeepsie High School in search of their first win of the season. They got what they were looking for with a hard fought victory over Poughkeepsie, 26-6.
The Red Devils now hold a record of one one and one loss. They will hope to improve upon this win with a victory in their next game against Port Chester on Saturday Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. at Torpy Field.
