I AM MY OWN WIFE – Various times throughout June at the Studio Theater in Exile Hudson Valley MOCA
I AM MY OWN WIFE by Doug Wright, directed by Mara Mills and starring Thomas Kramer, will be playing for the month of June at the Studio Theater in Exile at the Hudson Valley MOCA. I AM MY OWN WIFE is a play based on the life of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf who survived Nazi and Communist Germany Stasi (secret police) as a transgender woman wearing a dress. The play is an intimate and thought-provoking theatrical experience exploring themes of identity, resilience, and self-acceptance.
Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, lived through the Nazi and Communist occupations of Berlin. A lover and collector of objects, founded the Gründerzeit Museum in Mahldorf, located in the eastern suburb of Berlin, to house not only her beloved clocks, phonographs, and other castoffs of German industrial design, but also the Mulack-Ritze, a gay nightclub always under threat of destruction by the Stasi, the secret police of East Germany from 1950 to 1990. There she maintained a “safe-place” for gays, lesbians, and transvestites providing a haven for the gay community in East Berlin.
Celebrated and vilified, Charlotte’s story is part of untold history. The play explores not just her life, but also the playwright’s investigation into her life, and his conflicting feelings about her complicated life.
The play is presented as a series of interviews that Doug conducted with Charlotte in her home in Berlin, the Gründerzeit Museum, in the early 1990s. Charlotte tells the story of her life, and Doug tells the story of writing this play. Charlotte was born a boy in 1928 but always felt more comfortable as a girl. She collected furniture and things from abandoned homes, and eventually started the Museum to house them and share them with people. She moved the legendary gay bar Mulack-Ritze Cabaret into her basement until the Communists ultimately shut it down. The Museum was her life, and she received a commendation from the government because of her work.
Tom Krammer, literally brings to life an amazing character at the Studio Theater in Exile. Doug Wright’s story, as playwright and character, is as important as Charlotte’s. From idol worship to disillusionment to understanding and love, the audience watches the playwright grow as a man and a creator. This one-person show is educational and entertaining, daring and beautiful and an important addition to history and theater.
I AM MY OWN WIFE has eight performances over the course of June with an opening reception set for June 8th at 7pm and the final performance June 23rd. Talkbacks with the Actor will be Sunday after the performance, and there will be an opening reception on June 8th. Admission is between $20-$30. For tickets CLICK HERE.
