The downward trend in voter turnout continued for the third year in the Peekskill City School district election on Tuesday, May 21. Of the 12,519 eligible voters, 382 people (three percent) came to the polls to pass the $123 million budget and select the two candidates running unopposed.
In the Hendrick Hudson district election, where there was a race with five candidates vying for two seats, seven percent of the 11,544 eligible voters cast a ballot for a candidate and four percent voted on a proposition. Top vote getters were Lauren Stanco and Cori Boudin. All budget propositions passed.
Peekskill results
In Peekskill, the two propositions ($123 million budget and a $15 million capital reserve fund) passed with 381 and 382 votes respectively.
Incumbent Alan Jenkins received 310 votes and newcomer Christina Washington was elected with 315 votes. Fourteen people wrote in candidate names.
In Peekskill, the number of voters who showed up has decreased during the past three years. In 2022, when four candidates were vying for three seats, 522 people voted. Last year when two candidates were running for two seats, 434 people came to the polls. There are 12,519 eligible voters in Peekskill.
The $123 million spending plan (Proposition #1) received 317 yes votes or 83 percent and will see an average monthly increase of $5.76 for property owners or $69.08 annually.
Proposition #2 passed with 339 votes for the establishment of a $15 million capital reserve fund that will see replacement and upgrades of HVAC systems among other maintenance.
Henrick Hudson results
In Hendrick Hudson, Lauren Stanco received 815 votes, Cori Boudin came in second with 741. Devys Rivera received 730 votes, Christine Jacknick received 726, and Joseph Mintz received 83 votes.
All the Propositions passed in Hen Hud. The $93 million budget passed with 1,244 votes and 393 no. The Capital Improvement Bond Project passed 1,139 to 490 votes. Proposition #3 to create an Energy System Tax Stabilization Reserve Fund received 1,213 yes votes to 406 no. The School Buses, Vans, Vehicle and Related Equipment proposition received 1255 yes votes to 378 no. And the Hendrick Hudson Free Library proposition passed 1,321 votes to 322 no.
