Crowds cram riverfront for colorful fireworks display
Parade finished before rain began
July 5, 2023
Under threatening skies, marchers in the Peekskill Volunteer Fireman’s Parade stepped off Tuesday morning and wove through the streets of downtown, ending at the Central Firehouse on Main and Broad Streets, moments before a light rain began falling. The seven marching bands, interspersed by community, church and civic groups, played patriotic tunes to the delight of onlookers. Children were waving flags and grabbing for red and blue beads and frisbees tossed by the State Farm office of Kyle Rourke. A staple of Peekskill parades were the purple umbrellaed Elks Club members, along with Girl Scout troops. Members of the Lincoln Society and the Peekskill Democratic Committee marched with members of the Dance Conservatory and auxiliaries of fire companies.
Hours later, thousands gathered at the riverfront for a concert and fireworks display that lasted a little more than 20 minutes. It took another 30 minutes for the crowd to disperse on foot from the riverfront.
