Sweater weather has officially arrived, but don’t fret, South Street Jazz is back featuring Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead just in time to heat up the downtown. Leading this New York jazz quintet is Jonathan Barber, named the #1 Up and Coming Drummer by Modern Drummer Magazine in 2018. On Sunday, October 20 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m, South Street Jazz transforms The Artist Spot at Antonia Arts into an intimate 60 seat pop up Jazz club. That is where you will find Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead for one night only.
Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead is a highly sought after and fast rising New York jazz quintet. The band offers a fresh blend of classic jazz with elements of gospel, rock, soul, and fusion that’s already attracting listeners across generations. Vision Ahead is made up of band leader and drummer, Jonathan Barber, Matt Knoegel on saxophone, Tony Davis on guitar, Matt Dwonszyk on bass and Michael Carabello on piano.
Jonathan Barber has had a very successful career already working with artists such as Steve Davis, The Brooklyn Philharmonic, and Erykah Badu. Now, Barber has taken on the role as a bandleader and leading Vision Ahead.
Barber is the main composer, however, each member of the band contributes compositions and arrangements. With strong melodic motifs and almost every extended solo accompanied by new forms or themes, Barber’s music strikes the rare balance of maintaining a clear emotional through-line while still providing each soloist a fresh foundation on which to build.
Even when they’re playing hard—and they do reach some thrilling crescendos—this extremely dynamic band always feels impeccably sharp and in control, cool far beyond their years.
