Even though Hurricane Debby is trampling through the area currently, bringing rain and wreaking havoc on everyone’s weekday plans, the sun is waiting in the wings and ready to pop back out this Saturday and Sunday. That means, weekend plans are currently being made in houses all across the Hudson Valley and right here in the City of Peekskill. Here are three events just outside of the City to include in your weekend plans.

Herb Drying for Beginners at Hilltop Hanover Farms
There is nothing more tasty than taking homegrown freshly picked basil and putting it on pasta with marinara sauce and freshly grated parmesan cheese, or taking some fresh pulled basil and eating it with slices of off the vine tomatoes and mozzarella cheese, or even taking some fresh cilantro and adding it to homemade salsa, guacamole or cilantro lime rice. However, once the winter comes, our fresh garden herbs are no longer readily available. But those herbs, dried, can last all winter to add to your dishes.
On Saturday, August 10th from 2:00 to 3:00 pm the Friends of Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center will host an Herb Drying for Beginners workshop. At this workshop, participants will learn how and why to harvest, dry, store, and use some of the most common herbs. This program will meet in the classroom and is recommended for everyone ages 8+. Pre-registration is required where you can pay what you want. To register for the event via Eventbrite, click here.
Hilltop Hanover Farm is 20 minutes east of Peekskill in the Town of Yorktown and owned by Westchester County Parks. The Friends of Hilltop Hanover Farm & Environmental Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, offers educational programs including field days, farm tours, and interpretive education. The Putnam Valley Grange was founded in 1897. It is a non-profit all-volunteer family organization serving the local, state, national and world community and has done so since its founding. The Putnam Valley Grange Hall was originally constructed in 1900/1901. Much of the building was destroyed by fire in the 1970s, but the structure was lovingly rebuilt by the membership. Originally a fraternity almost exclusively of farmers, today’s Grange is an organization open to all those with an interest in helping others through community involvement, with a special emphasis on working cooperatively with our environment for the betterment of all. The Putnam Valley Grange serves the community of its members in Putnam Valley, NY and the surrounding area – the only surviving Grange in all of Putnam County, NY. The Grange is a national, non-profit fraternal organization dedicated to the preservation of agriculture and rural life.
