Mark Monday, April 8th, 2024, on your calendar as “Solar Eclipse Day”: the day the sun will darken! If the weather is fair, you should have no difficulty observing a partial or even total eclipse of the sun from much of North America. In preparation for this Astronomical event, one of the best-known broadcast meteorologists in the Northeast, former News 12 and FiOS 1 weather forecaster, and Putnam Valley’s very own, Joe Rao will present a Zoom program on Wednesday, March 13, from 6:00 pm – 7:00pm entitled “The Sun Will Darken on April 8th – Presented by Joe Rao.
Eclipses of the sun and moon are dramatic natural rare events which have been described in records going back for centuries in many civilizations. They occur when one heavenly body such as a moon or planet moves into the shadow of another heavenly body. Ancient astronomers discovered certain cycles of occurrence of eclipses, which then allowed prediction. Accurate prediction could command power and prestige.
In this Zoom presentation by Joe Rao, participants will examine the mechanics of what causes eclipses as well as how you can safely observe and enjoy this amazing astronomical event. The Zoom presentation is free and open to all. To register for this event register HERE!
A full total solar eclipse will be seen from Western New York State all the way across the North Country and the Adirondacks. In Peekskill, we will be lucky to see almost the entire sun darkened between the hours of 2-4 pm. According to the National Weather Service at weather.gov 2024 Total Solar Eclipse website, the chance of clouds on April 8 is 20 percent or less which means there is a high chance of New York State seeing the Solar Eclipse!
For your safety, DO NOT look directly at the sun. You can do so buy buying special glasses that will allow you to view the sun safely for the entire eclipse at local retailers and online.
