Cortlandt can’t take all the Copland credit

Cortlandt cant take all the Copland credit

To the editor:

The Aaron Copland story caught my eye. I’ve always been very proud of the fact that Mr. Copland once lived in – Peekskill! That is, with a little investigation, Cortlandt Manor wasn’t designated with its own zip code of 10567 until 1991,  AFTER his death in 1990. Up until that time, one would have to say the iconic composer lived in Peekskill from 1960 to 1990, a full 30 years. If he had any correspondence, as I’m sure he did, his return address was Peekskill, New York 10566.

So, in my opinion, while the Rock Hill homestead is now part of Cortlandt Manor, New York 10567, any musical compositions created during the last 30 years of the maestro’s life occurred while he was living in Peekskill, New York, 10566, from Nonet for Three Violins in 1960 to Proclamation for Orchestra in 1990. That said, Cortlandt Manor cannot take all the glory but must bestow much of that honor on Peekskill!  (Perhaps it was his muse.)
