The bravery and courage of Dorie Miller during World War II  was recalled under the bright sunlight at Torpy Field on Friday evening as  the Black Diamonds Academic Success program joined community members and officials in a pre-Memorial Day ceremony. Former US Congressman Joe Dioguardi spoke about Miller, an African American serviceman, who has not received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the war.  Dioguardi has been on a 30-year mission to secure a medal for Miller.

Student Journalist Damien Ritter captured some of the events from the evening in these photos.
