Mayfred McClelland

Mayfred Grace McClelland (née Sherman) of Yorktown, New York, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025, surrounded by her family, at the age of 96.
Born on February 23, 1929, in Waddington, New York, she was the daughter of William and Eva Sherman (née Beaulieu). Her early years were spent on the family’s dairy farm in Madrid, New York, where she learned the values of hard work, community, and family principles she carried throughout her life. For everyone she touched, stories of those farmhouse days will remain through the years.
Mayfred graduated from Madrid Central High School and went on to study food at Canton ATI. She was an active student, participating in numerous school activities and proudly joining the Alpha Chi Omicron sorority. Her interest in nutrition led her to train as a dietitian at New Rochelle Hospital, later transferring to St. John’s Hospital in Yonkers.
On April 11, 1953, Mayfred married Harry Carl McClelland at the United Methodist Church of Yonkers. In 1956, they moved to Cortlandt Manor, where they raised their children and became entrenched in their community. Mayfred worked as a teacher’s aide at Blue Mountain Middle School before returning to her calling as a dietitian at Hudson Valley Hospital Center, where she served with compassion until her retirement in 1988.
A woman of deep faith and civic spirit, Mayfred was actively involved in the Peekskill United Methodist Church, the Garden Club, PTA, Grange, and Girl Scouts. In retirement, she and Harry moved to Hammondsport, New York, where she continued her service through the firehouse auxiliary, the Order of the Eastern Star, and as president of a local ladies’ group.
After Harry’s passing in 2000, she returned to the Cortlandt Manor area and remained engaged in her community as vice president of the Verplanck Senior Citizens and active parishioner of the Shrub Oak United Methodist Church.
Mayfred was a devoted sister, a nurturing mother, a joyful grandmother, and a proud great-grandmother. Her love for her family was unwavering.
She is survived by her loving siblings, Mildred McDowell of Madrid, New York, Ruth Koch of Manassas, Virginia, and Floyd Sherman of Potsdam, New York; her children, Gretchen McClelland Gale (née McClelland) and her fiancée Alphonse Prisco III of Carmel and Harry Carl McClelland Jr. and wife Myriam McClelland (née Honig) of Ft. Meyers, Florida; her grandson, James McClelland Gale, and wife Megan Gale (née Fausner) of Cortlandt Manor; her great-grandchildren, Henry William Gale and Grant Charles Gale, also of Cortlandt Manor, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Harry, her sisters Margaret Moulton and Lodine Stiles, and her brothers Marvin, Morton, and Morris Sherman.
Mayfred’s legacy is one of kindness and resilience. Her lively spirit meant there was never a dull moment when she was around, and though she has passed on, the echoes of her laughter and the joy she gave so freely will continue to brighten our lives.

Louis A. Garber

With great love and sorrow, the family of Louis A. Garber announces his peaceful passing on September 15, 2025, at the age of 95.
Louis was blessed to have lived a long and happy life marked by many extraordinary journeys.
Born on August 7, 1930, in St. Leonhard, South Tyrol, Italy, he moved to Germany with his family at a young age. As a young man, Louis struck out on a different path than most of his siblings as he crossed the continent and vast ocean to seek a new future, coming first to Canada before settling in New York.
At this pivotal moment, Louis’s path crossed with his future wife, Whaja Lee, who was on a journey of her own from South Korea to Georgia and, finally, New York. Here, she quite literally made a detour when she got lost and stopped to ask Louis for directions. From that point forward, their journeys were intertwined with the fateful encounter leading to 48 years of marriage.
As they built their lives together, Louis also successfully built a career in finance, where he worked for the Depository Trust Company for many years until his retirement. On the home front, Louis and Whaja raised twin daughters together, Sonia and Rita. Throughout this time, a love of travel was evident as the family took many camping trips and vacations together, both across the country and abroad.
Once Whaja also retired, the couple was ready to embark on a new adventure, traveling across the country in an RV for over a year. After this amazing experience, they settled in San Felipe, Mexico, to enjoy the beach and mountains. The final leg of Louis’s journey was coming back home to Peekskill with his wife to be near family.
Besides traveling, Louis had many other interests — he loved to play chess and was an avid sports fan of nearly all sports but most especially his beloved Yankees. Louis was always ready with a smile and a joke to make you laugh. He had a zest for life that couldn’t be contained and approached life with a generosity of spirit that left an indelible mark on those around him. As we celebrate his life, we know that his cherished memory will stay in our hearts forever.
