Christine was born August 29, 1933, in New York City. She was a graduate of Peekskill High School. She devoted her life to service. In high school, she was voted as the one who, “did most for the school.” Later in life, she was awarded a proclamation from the Village of Buchanan for her duty and dedication to volunteer organizations and to her community. Christine was also honored as a Woman of Distinction for New York State. Finally, in her later years, she continued to contribute by knitting hats and shawls for local charities.
Christine was a lifelong member of St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in Peekskill and attended Trinity Boscobel United Methodist Church in Buchanan. She worked for 20 years at the N.Y. Power Authority at Indian Point and was said to have been seen glowing both inside and out.
Christine is predeceased by her husband of 10 years, George Salerno; her second husband of 43 years, Robert Metzger; her daughter, Robin Bleakley; and her grandson, James Webb. She is survived by three children, Marcelle Salerno, Philip Salerno (Karin), and Roxane Webb (Keith Lunden). Christine will be remembered for her warm personality, her deep sense of community, and her unwavering loyalty to the New York Mets. Every August, she joyfully celebrated her birthday all month long with yard signs encouraging neighbors to “honk for my birthday!” Many will remember her time spent sitting on her front porch and neighbors stopping by to chat. She lived in an old-fashioned neighborhood where the neighbors would check in on her and help with chores as needed.
